10.8.05 | Brake pad thickness, wear limit (with | Type 452.3/4 |
| Checking | ||
1 | Check the lining thickness of the brake pads (5) and condition of the brake disks
If the brake pads (5) are worn down beyond the permissible wear limit, the web between the sealing groove and dust boot (9) may be damaged, for this reason:
Check brake system for leaks
| Remove/install | ||
Danger! | Risk of poisoning caused by swallowing brake fluid. Risk of injury caused by brake fluid coming into contact with skin and eyes | Only pour brake fluid into suitable and appropriately marked containers. Wear protective clothing and eye protection when handling brake fluid.

2 | Remove front wheels | ||
3 | Unscrew bolt (2) on brake caliper (1) at the top | When loosening the screw (2), counterhold the bolt (4) using a suitable fork wrench.
| |||
4 | Fold down brake caliper (1) | Installation: When folding up the brake caliper (1), ensure that the springs (3) of brake pads (5) are clamped under the brake caliper (1).
5 | Check bellows (6) for damage | If the upper bellows are damaged (6) they should be replaced, if the lower bellows (6) are damaged the complete brake caliper (1) should be replaced.
Installation: Ensure that the bellows (6) are seated correctly. The lip at the bellows (6) must fit correctly in the groove at the corresponding pin (4).
6 | Take out brake pads (5) | Do not press the brake pedal when the brake pads (5) are removed, otherwise the brake piston (8) will be pressed out of the brake caliper (1). Observe installation position of brake pads (5).
7 | Clean contact surfaces (arrows) of brake pads (5) in housing shaft (7).
8 | Check the upper and lower pins (4) | Check the ease of movement of the upper and lower pin (4), if the pin (4) is notchy or difficult to move the brake caliper (1) should be replaced otherwise there is the risk of uneven brake effect.
9 | Press back brake piston (8). | The fluid level in the brake fluid reservoir rises when the brake piston (8) is pushed back. Ensure that the reservoir does not overflow. It must be possible to move the brake piston (8) easily.
Brake piston resetting device
10 | Check the leaktightness of the dust boot (9) on the brake piston (8)
11 | Apply brake paste to the contact surfaces (arrows) on the housing shaft (7) and brake pads (5). | Installation: Coat with a thin and even layer of brake paste, otherwise the brake effect is impaired
Molykote 111 grease | |||
12 | Install in the reverse order
Danger! | Risk of accident when commissioning the vehicle due to a lack of braking effect when the service brake is operated for the first time after repair work | Before starting engine, actuate brake pedal several times until the pressure is built up and maintained in the brake system.
13 | Operate the brake pedal several times until the brake pads (5) contact the brake disks | A firm resistance must be noticeable.
14 | Check the brake fluid level in the brake fluid | Top up or extract brake fluid until it is at "MAX" marking on brake fluid reservoir.
15 | Check brake system for leaks |
