Oil filler/drain screw on rear axle differential modified

 The oil filler screws and oil drain screws should always be replaced after being unscrewed.

The new oil filler screws and drain screws as well as the tapped holes must be cleaned with a special cleaning spray and provided with a special sealing compound

The new oil filler screw as well as the tapped hole must be cleaned with a special cleaning spray and the oil filler screw provided with a special sealing compound

 Only carry out oil level check at interior temperature.

Remove/install

 Danger!

Risk of death caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform.

Align vehicle between columns of vehicle lift and position four support plates at vehicle lift support points specified by vehicle manufacturer.

Loosen parking brake and move selector lever into neutral

Remove wheel carrier (1)

Lever rear axle shaft (2) out of rear axle differential (3) and remove rear axle shaft (2)

 If both rear axle shafts (2) are removed, the rear axle differential (3) should also be removed after removing a rear axle shaft (2):



Remove rear axle differential.

 Installation: Replace circlip (4) on inner splined shaft profile.



Checking

Check constant velocity joints, boots and end cover for leaks and damage

 The rear axle shaft (2) must be replaced complete if constant velocity joints or rubber boots are damaged.

Install in the reverse order

Check oil level in rear axle differential (3) and correct if necessary.

 Mixing of old universal hypoid gear oil and the new FE hypoid gear oil should be avoided due to the better fuel economy.
