Danger! | Risk of death caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off the lifting platform. | Align vehicle between columns of vehicle lift and position four support plates at vehicle lift support points specified by vehicle manufacturer.
| Notes on self-locking nuts and bolts | ||
While working on the rear axle care must be taken to ensure that the surfaces of aluminum components do not get any scratches, cracks and notches. Otherwise the service life of the of the parts will be reduced.
1 | Raise vehicle with vehicle lift
2 | Secure vehicle on vehicle lift
3 | Detach left and right rear wheel
4 | Detach twelve-point collar nut (40) from rear axle shaft (37) | The vehicle must no longer be moved on its wheels when the twelve-point collar nut (40) has been loosened. The wheel bearings can otherwise be damaged.
Installation: Replace twelve-point collar nut (40).
| |||
5 | Remove left or right rear brake disk (61) | Model 172.475
Model 172 (except 172.475)
6 | Detach left rear axle rpm sensor (L6/3) or right rear axle rpm sensor (L6/4) from wheel carrier (7)
7 | Unclip electrical lines from wheel carrier (7)
Danger! | Risk of injury caused by pinching or crushing when working on springs or spring bodies that are under tension | Use only approved tensioning devices; shield off hazard area if necessary.
8 | Tension left or right rear spring | Do not use an impact wrench.

| Springs; general background information. | ||
9 | Raise wheel carrier (7) with transmission jack and transmission platform until the rear axle shaft (37) is approximately horizontal | Installation: Tighten the threaded connections of the thrust arm (5), camber strut (2) and strut rod (3) as well as of the tie rod (4) and spring control arm (6). Do not lower the wheel carrier (7) until these threaded connections have been tightened.

10 | Detach tie rod (4) from wheel carrier (7) | Installation: Screw on the threaded connection only loosely.
11 | Detach strut rod (3) from wheel carrier (7) | Installation: Screw on the threaded connection only loosely.
12 | Detach camber strut (2) from wheel carrier (7) | Installation: Screw on the threaded connection only loosely.
13 | Detach thrust arm (5) from wheel carrier (7) | Installation: Screw on the threaded connection only loosely.
14 | Check whether rear axle shaft (37) is firmly seated in rear axle shaft flange (8) | If the rear axle shaft (37) is difficult to remove:
Press rear axle shaft (37) out of rear axle shaft flange (8)
Bracket | |||

15 | Detach spring control arm (6) from wheel carrier (7) | Installation: Screw on the threaded connection only loosely.
16 | Remove wheel carrier (7) with brake cover plate (9) and wheel bearing (10) from rear axle shaft (37) | Remove the wheel carrier (7) carefully. The rubber boot and the rotor for the left rear axle rpm sensor (L6/3) and right rear axle rpm sensor (L6/4) on the rear axle shaft (37) can otherwise be damaged.
17 | Unscrew bolts (11) and remove wheel bearing (10) from wheel carrier (7) | When installing a new wheel bearing (10) and if the removed wheel carrier (7) is to be reused.
The replacement wheel carrier (7) is supplied with installed wheel bearing (10).
| |||
18 | Detach brake cover plate (9) from wheel carrier (7) | When replacing the wheel carrier (7).
19 | Install in the reverse order
20 | Perform wheel alignment check |
