Modification notes
| Remove/install | ||
| Notes on self-locking nuts and bolts | ||
Installation | Caution, important note: The threads in the frame floor assembly must be recut and blown out, as any adhesive residue in a thread will prevent the bolt's necessary preload force from being achieved, despite having reached the specified torque and specified angle of rotation.
| While working on the rear axle, care must be taken to ensure that the surface of aluminum components do not get any scratches, cracks and notches. Otherwise the service life of the parts will be affected | ||
| Only undo the bolts of the front rubber mount (1a) or the rear rubber mount (1b) | If bolts on the front and rear rubber mount (1a, 1b) are to be jointly undone, then a wheel alignment must be performed, see: | |
Perform chassis alignment.
Installation | Only tighten nuts and bolts of chassis components when vehicle is in a ready-to-drive condition.
1 | Secure vehicle on the lifting platform
2 | Empty air springs (41) completely using STAR DIAGNOSIS | Vehicles with AIRmatic (semi-active air suspension), code 489
| Notes on AIRmatic | ||
| Connect STAR DIAGNOSIS and read out fault memory | ||
Installation: The filling process for the air springs (41) must be observed, otherwise the air springs will be irreparably damaged.
| |||
| |||
| |||
3 | Remove rear wheels | ||
| Remove/install wheels, rotate if necessary | ||
4 | Remove crossmember (35)
5.1 | Remove exhaust system at flange connection | Model 219.354 /356 /357 /372
Model 219.375 /376/ 377
5.2 | Remove rear muffler | Model 219.322
6 | Remove rear section components on underfloor paneling
7 | Detach and remove heat shields (105c, 105d)
| |||
8 | Detach propeller shaft (106) from rear axle differential (50) | The flexible coupling remains on the propeller shaft (106).
Installation: Attach propeller shaft (106) to differential (50).
| |||
9 | Detach fitting sleeves of flexible coupling on flange of rear axle center assembly (50)
| Drift for loosening fitting sleeves in flex disks. | ||
10 | Remove bolts from propeller shaft intermediate bearing (106a) and remove rear part of propeller shaft (106) | Installation: Assemble propeller shaft (106) in correct order. Only tighten bolts of the propeller shaft center support bearing (106a) after attaching the flexible coupling to the differential (50).
| |||
| Long-life grease (NLGI grade 2) | ||
11 | Unhook brake cables (86) of parking brake from brackets (86a, 86b) on rear axle
12 | Unhook brake cables (86) of parking brake on cable slack adjuster
13.1 | Unclip electrical feed lines from right and left rear axle rpm sensors, from rear axle level sensor, from brake wear sensor and from right and left rear axle damping valve units from all retaining clamps (arrows) | Vehicles with AIRmatic (semi-active air suspension), code 489
13.2 | Unclip electrical feed lines from right and left rear axle rpm sensors, brake wear sensor and from the rear axle level sensor from all retaining clamps (arrows) | Vehicles without AIRmatic
14 | Drain fuel tank. | Vehicles with diesel engine
Vehicles with gasoline engine
15 | Remove filler hose (17) of fuel tank | Check filler hose (17) and clamps for damage, replace if necessary.
16 | Support rear axle on rear axle center assembly (50) using transmission jack and transmission platform
17 | Detach right and left shock absorber (42) on rear axle from spring control arms
18 | Undo rear axle carrier (1) at rear on frame floor, to do so undo bolts of rear rubber mount (1b) | Installation: Recut and blow out the threads in the frame floor assembly to ensure a perfect threaded connection.
Use new bolts. | |||
| |||
19 | Lower transmission jack | Lower far enough for the rear rubber mount (1b) to be removed and installed.
20 | Remove rear rubber mount (1b) of rear axle suspension | Always replace rear rubber bushings (1b) in pairs.
| |||
Cleaner from package | |||
Antifriction agent | |||
21 | Install in the reverse order
22 | Adjust parking brake
23 | Check oil level in rear axle center assembly (50) and correct if necessary | In order to avoid damage to the rear axle center assembly (50), it is absolutely essential to follow the work procedure and the Specifications for Operating Fluids.
