Modification notes
| Remove/install | ||
Danger! | Risk of injury caused by body parts being jammed or crushed. Risk of injury to skin and eyes caused by brake fluid spraying out at high pressure when working on the SBC brake system | Deactivate SBC brake system using STAR DIAGNOSIS.
Danger! | Risk of injury caused by pinching or crushing when working on springs or spring bodies that are under tension | Use only approved tensioning devices; shield off hazard area if necessary.
| Notes on self-locking nuts and bolts | ||
| While working on the rear axle, care must be taken to ensure that the surface of aluminum components do not get any scratches, cracks and notches. Otherwise the service life of the parts will be affected | ||
Installation | Only tighten nuts and bolts of chassis components when vehicle is in a ready-to-drive condition.
1 | Deactivate SBC brake system using STAR DIAGNOSIS. | Vehicles with Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC)
The following steps should be run through in STAR DIAGNOSIS: Select the menu item "SBC-Sensotronic Brake Control"/"Initial startup after repair"/"Deactivate 'SBC' system". Then process all the individual steps from top to bottom.
| Connect STAR DIAGNOSIS and read out fault memory | ||
2 | Secure vehicle on the lifting platform
3 | Empty air springs (41) completely using STAR DIAGNOSIS | Vehicles with AIRmatic (semi-active air suspension), code 489
| Notes on AIRmatic | ||
Installation: The filling process for the air springs (41) must be observed, otherwise the air springs will be irreparably damaged.
| |||
| |||
| |||
4 | Remove rear wheels | ||
| Remove/install wheels | ||
5 | Remove crossmember (35)
6 | Remove exhaust system at flange connection | Model 219.354/ 356/ 357/ 372
Model 219.375 /376/ 377
Model 219.322 | |||
7 | Remove rear section components on underfloor paneling
8 | Detach heat shield (105c) and heat shield (105d) and remove
| |||
9 | Detach propeller shaft (106) from flange on rear axle center assembly (50) | The flexible coupling remains on the propeller shaft (106).
Installation: Mount propeller shaft (106) on rear axle center assembly (50).
| |||
10 | Undo fitting sleeves of flexible coupling on flange of rear axle center assembly (50)
| Drift for loosening fitting sleeves in flex disks. | ||
11 | Remove bolts from propeller shaft intermediate bearing (106a) and remove rear part of propeller shaft (106)
Installation: Assemble propeller shaft (106) in correct order.
Installation: Only tighten the bolts on the propeller shaft center support bearing (106a) after attaching the flexible coupling to the rear axle differential (50).
| |||
| Long-life grease (NLGI grade 2) | ||
12 | Unhook brake cables (86) from bracket (86a) and bracket (86b) on rear axle
13 | Remove rear brake pads | Use hook to suspend brake caliper from vehicle to reduce loads on brake hose and avoid destroying brake hose.
Vehicles with floating brake caliper
Vehicles with fixed brake caliper
14.1 | Unclip electrical lines from right and left rear axle rpm sensor, rear axle level sensor (B22/3), brake wear indicator sensor and from right and left rear axle damping valve unit from all retaining clamps (arrows) | Vehicles with AIRmatic (semi-active air suspension), code 489
14.2 | Unclip electrical feed lines of left and right rear axle rpm sensors, of brake wear sensor and of rear axle level sensor (B22/3) from all retaining clamps (arrows). | Vehicles without AIRmatic
15 | Drain fuel tank (18) | Vehicles with diesel engine
Vehicles with gasoline engine
16 | Remove filler hose (17) of fuel tank (18)
17 | Support rear axle using transmission platform and transmission jack at rear axle center assembly (50) and lash securely
18 | Detach rear axle carrier (1) from front of frame; to do this, unscrew bolts (1a)
19 | Carefully lower rear axle using transmission platform and transmission jack
20 | Unclip linkage (3) of rear axle level sensor (B22/3) on stabilizer bar (77)
21 | Detach stabilizer bar (77) from left and right link rod (6k)
22 | Detach left and right bearing (77b) of stabilizer bar (77) from rear axle carrier (1)
23 | Remove stabilizer bar (77) to the right
24 | Install in the reverse order
25.1 | Activate SBC brake system using STAR DIAGNOSIS | Vehicles with Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC)
The following steps should be run through in STAR DIAGNOSIS: Select the menu item "SBC-Sensotronic Brake Control"/"Initial startup after repair"/"Remove/install brake pads". Then process all the individual steps from top to bottom.
Danger! | Risk of accident when commissioning the vehicle due to a lack of braking effect when the service brake is operated for the first time after repair work | Before starting engine, actuate brake pedal several times until the pressure is built up and maintained in the brake system.
25.2 | Press the brake pedal several times until the brake pads contact the brake disks | Vehicles with Adaptive Brake (ABR)
Firm resistance should be noticeable at the brake pedal. |
