Remove fender liner from left rear fender

Remove air ducting from charge air cooler

Unscrew bolts (3) and remove air filter housing (2) upwards

Unscrew bolt (4)

Remove bolts (5) of bushing of transmission mounting (6) from transmission (1)



Unscrew bolts (7) of bracket (8) on cylinder head and put down bracket (8) to one side

Fasten retaining plate to the upper threaded hole in the cylinder head with one bolt (7)

Install support braces on the engine lifting device, position engine lifting device and hook a suitable chain into the retaining plate

 Turn the spindle on the  engine hoist back far enough until it is possible to lower the engine with the transmission (1) by another approx. 4 cm.

Raise vehicle with vehicle lift

Detach wiring harness from transmission (1)

Pull out the plug (9) on the starter (M1)

Unscrew nut (10) and remove charge current line (11) from starter (M1)

Release shutoff valve for heating system (Y16/2)

As of 31.8.10

 Undo bolt (16), push holder (17) and heating system shutoff valve (Y16/2) with connected lines to one side and fasten to suitable position using cable ties.

Unscrew bolts (12) of carrier for front engine mount (13) from transmission (1)



Remove bolt (14)



Support transmission (1) with transmission jack and removal fixture and secure with tensioning strap

Unscrew bolts (5) of bushing of transmission mounting (6) from transmission (1)

 Installation: Screw in bolts (5) until they abut.

Remove bolts (15)



Loosen transmission (1) from engine and lower

 When moving the transmission (1) out and in ensure that no electrical lines and hoses are damaged.

 Helper required to guide the transmission (1).

 Installation: The centering sleeves must seat firmly in the cylinder crankcase, replace centering sleeves if necessary. Grease transmission input shaft lightly.

Release tensioning strap and remove transmission (1) from transmission jack

 Aid of helper required.

Unscrew bracket of air filter housing (2) from transmission (1)

When replacing the transmission (1).

Detach starter (M1) from transmission (1)

When replacing the transmission (1) except on model 451.380/480.



Detach clutch motor from transmission (1)

When replacing the transmission (1).

 Installation: Only install clutch motor after installing the transmission (1).

Install in the reverse order

Perform commissioning without control unit replacement

 Observe menu guidance in DAS (DAS).



Connect STAR DIAGNOSIS and read out fault memory
