1 | Check engine oil level; correct if necessary | | |

Risk of injury (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running. | Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts. | |
2 | Warm up engine to normal operating temperature | Coolant temperature 60 to 80°C. | |

3 | Remove cylinder head cover | ||

4 | Turn engine at the crankshaft in direction of engine rotation until cams stand above the compensating element (1) to be checked on its base circle | Do not turn engine against direction of engine rotation. | |

Compensating elements (1) which do not lie on the base circle of the cam to be checked are to be replaced. | |||

Remove/install hydraulic valve play compensating elements | |||
5 | Press in compensating element (1) by hand using a suitable tool (2) | | |
Press compensating element (1) downwards using the normal force of the hand (arrow). If pressure is too strong, the compensating element (1) will appear to drop, but in reality the valve opens. If several compensating elements (1) drop, inspect oil duct and compensating elements (1) oil feed bores for contamination. | |||
If one compensating element (1) drops much more than the others then this must be replaced | |||
