R9 Glow plug
a Control winding
b Heating winding
c Plug connection
Glow plugs position | The glow plugs (R9) are screwed into the cylinder head behind the exhaust manifold.
Glow plugs task | The glow plugs pre-heat the combustion chamber in order to achieve the ignition temperature required for the fuel-air mixture.
Glow plugs design | The glow plug (R9) consists of a housing with female thread and an interference-fit glow rod. The heating element is integrated in the glow rod. It consists of a heating winding (b) and a control winding (a) connected in series.
Glow plugs function | When the preglow system is switched on, a current of about 30 amperes flows to each glow plug. The heating winding heats the glow plug. The control winding increases its resistance as the temperature rises and limits the current to approx. 15-25 ampere. The glow plug (R9) is protected in this way from excessive loads. |
