Location
R4 Spark plugs
On each cylinder, a spark plug is inserted from the top of the cylinder head to the center.
Task
Spark plugs ignite the suctioned and compressed fuel-air mixture due to arcing between electrodes.
Design
All spark plug characteristics are defined by type symbols provided by the manufacturer (e.g. heat rating, seat shape, thread, width across flats, electrode material, spark position).
Up to 11/2006 spark plugs were installed with a M141.5 thread and from 12/2006 spark plugs were installed with a M121.5 thread.
Function
The ignition voltage flows from the ignition lines of the directly plugged in ignition coils to the spark plugs and causes arcing in the air gap between the central electrode and ground electrode.
