| Check | ||
1 | Park the vehicle on leveled surface and engage the parking brake | The correct oil level in the automatic transmission is of fundamental importance, because both the oil excess and insufficiency are harmful, and compromise the transmission operation.
Checking at cold | |||
2 | Start the engine at 1000 - 1500 rpm during at least one minute | the oil temperature in the transmission oil pan must be within 16 to 49 °C.
The purpose of the checking at cold is to determine if the transmission has oil enough to be operated until an inspection at hot can be carried on.
3 | Return the engine to idle speed, change the selection lever to D and then to R | Procedure necessary to complete the hydraulic circuits with fluid.
4 | Change the selector lever to N and let the engine at idle speed (500 - 800 rpm)
5 | Clean around the filling pipe end (2)
6 | Remove and clean the dipstick (1), and check the transmission oil level | Gearboxes 723.401/402/403/404/413/423Oil for refueling - Approximate level

If the level is within the range (A) for checking at cold, the level is satisfactory
| |||
If it does not occur, add oil through the filling pipe (2) or drain the oil through the oil draining plug (4) in the transmission oil pan until reaching the upper limit of range (A).
Checking at hot | |||
7 | Actuate the selector lever to neutral (N) and let the engine at idle speed (500 - 800 rpm) | The oil temperature in the transmission oil pan must be within 71 and 93 °C
Check the oil level when the engine water temperature is stabilized and the transmission is running for at least one hour.
8 | Clean around the filling pipe end (2)
9 | Remove and clean the dipstick (1), and check the transmission oil level | It is absolutely necessary that the oil filled in the transmission is free of impurities. The containers, funnels must be clean and free from water. Put the dipstick (1) on a clean surface while refueling the transmission.

If the level is within the range (B) for checking at hot, the level is satisfactory
| |||
If it does not occur, add oil through the filling pipe (2) or drain the oil through the oil draining plug (4) in the transmission oil pan until reaching the upper limit of range (B). |
