The manufacturing tolerances of the drive pinion and crown gear are designed so that proper operation is guaranteed when the installed dimension and gear backlash are set accurately.

Checking the contact pattern of the gear set is an additional inspection.

Check ring gear/drive pinion contact pattern

Coat two teeth (offset by 180°) of crown gear with marking paste.

Turn drive pinion and, whilst doing so, brake crown gear with a piece of hard wood (arrow).


Through the use of braking, an axle drive under load is shown during testing.

Assess determined contact pattern.
