Removing

1

Remove differential assembly.

 For rear axle without through-drive.

 For rear axle with through-drive.

Install differential assembly to assembly stand

Remove bolt for mechanical locking of differential lock from differential lock shift cylinder

Remove shift collar of differential lock from the shift fork

 With differential lock only.

Detach locking plates (2)

Release bolts (4) on bearing caps (3)

Unscrew threaded rings (5, 9)



Remove both bearing caps (3)

 Mark both bearing caps (3) relative to bearing bracket.

Remove vinyl ring (8)

Lift ring gear with differential (7) off differential assembly housing (10) and remove the bearing outer races (6) from the tapered roller bearings

 Identify bearing outer races (6) and tapered roller bearings relative to each other.



Install

Insert ring gear with differential (7) into the differential assembly (10)

Position bearing outer races (6) on the tapered roller bearings

 If the tapered roller bearings were not replaced, observe identification of bearing outer races (6) relative to the tapered roller bearings.

Mount both bearing caps (3)

 Observe identification of bearing caps (3) relative to the bearing bracket.

Screw in bolts (4) to only approx. 30 Nm first.

Insert vinyl ring (8) into threaded ring (9) and screw in both threaded rings (5, 9)



Adjust gear backlash at differential assembly

Tighten bolts (4) of bearing caps (3)

 Rear axle 748.21/22/23/24

Secure threaded rings (5, 9) with locking plates (2)

 Rear axle 748.21/22/23/24

Insert shift collar of differential lock into the shift fork

 With differential lock only.

Turn in bolt for mechanical locking of differential lock on differential lock shift cylinder

 Only with differential lock and 300 mm dia. ring gear.

Remove differential assembly from support on assembly stand

Install differential assembly

 For rear axle without through-drive.
