20 - 1031 Degreasing and decalcifying cooling system
Degreasing
-------------------------------
1 Drain coolant completely.
2 Remove coolant thermostat (20-2470).
3 Set heater control to "warm".
4 Fill cooling system with a 5 % solution consisting of water and a mildly alcaline cleaner, e.g. P3-Croni (supplier: Henkel) or Grisiron 7220 (supplier: Farbwerke Hoechst) (50 g P3-Croni/1 liter water).
5 Warm up engine to approx. 85 °C by running at moderate speed and hold at this temperature for about 5 minutes. If necessary, the radiator can be covered over.
6 Switch off engine and allow cooling system to cool to about 70 °C.
7 Drain solution completely.
8 Immediately after this, fill cooling system twice with fresh water, run engine until warm (about 5 minutes) and drain water.
Note
Check drain openings for deposits and clean.
Decalcifying, derusting
-------------------------------
Note
The cooling system must always be degreased before decalcifying even if there is no visible trace of oil.
1 After the second flushing operation of
degreasing, fill the cooling system with a 10 %
(100 g/l) solution consisting of fresh water and citric, tartaric or oxalic acid (available from the chemical trade); citric acid should be used if possible.
Note
- Commercially available products, consisting of the above mentioned acids, can also be used for decalcifying and derusting.
- Chromic acid or products containing chrome should not be used to avoid polluting the waste water.
2 Run engine at moderate speed until warm,
approx. 85 °C, and hold at this temperature for
about 10 minutes.
3 Switch off engine and allow to cool to about 70 °C.
4 Drain decalcifying solution completely.
5 Flush cooling system with fresh water at least three times; run engine for 5 minutes each time when filled with fresh flushing water.
6 Install coolant thermostat with new seal
(20-2470).
7 Fill cooling system with specified coolant mixture.
Maintain the following mixing ratios:
50 % by vol. fresh water
50 % by vol. anti-corrosion/anti-freeze agent
- Fresh water specifications
Clean, and if possible soft water should be used for treating the coolant.
Drinking water frequently, but not always, meets the desired requirements. Salt water, brackish water, brines, industrial water, rain water, severely demineralized water and destilled water are not suitable.
Information regarding the quality of drinking water is available from the local water works or water authorities. Both the latter as well as companies and engineering offices specialized in this field can provide information regarding the treatment of water.
- The use of 1 % by vol. treating agent together
with 99 % by vol. water is only permissible in exceptional cases where ambient temperatures are constantly above freezing point, e.g. in tropical regions in which no approved anticorrosion/antifreeze agent is verifiably available.
- Disposing of coolant
Coolant must be collected and desposed of as special waste. It is essential to adhere to the legal provisions regarding the storage and disposal of such waste.
