MODEL 219.3 as of 1.7.06 with CODE (530) COMAND APS USA (with navigation system)

With the aid of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3), the navigation processor (N41/1) determines the location of the vehicle and the direction and distance from the destination (according to destination input). Subsequently the measures that are required to reach the destination (destination-oriented navigation) are initiated.

Once the navigation system is activated by opening the driver door (in the background), it is immediately operational after initialization via the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.

Predictive text input (speller)

During entry of the destination, letters not yet entered are supplemented from a stored list with the aid of the predictive text input feature.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The predictive speller refers to the entry of the destination and the street during destination-oriented navigation. The "Special Destinations" menu is supplemented by the "Bypassing other Locations" and "National Destinations" submenus.

Destination entry

The destination is entered menu-assisted via the COMAND operating, display and controller unit and is processed by the navigation processor. The COMAND operating, display and controller unit offers the following options for destination input in navigation mode:

via destination memory

Manual destination input

Special destinations (e.g. hospital, car park, gas station)

last destination entry

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Entry of intermediate destinations

Dynamic route calculation, with code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation system)

Address entry

Destination via map

Travel guide

Destination memory with individual destinations

Position finding

The COMAND operating, display and controller unit calculates the position of the vehicle on an ongoing basis by means
of 3 processes.

These are:

Global Positioning System (GPS) position finding

Basic position finding (dead reckoning)

Map-based position finding

The navigation processor calculates the most probable position by continuously comparing the results returned by these 3 methods.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Route calculation

The route is calculated by the navigation processor in accordance with the specified destination, or automatically, after a deviation from the suggested route has taken place. In the dynamic destination-oriented navigation system (with code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation system)), the route calculation is influenced by incorporating traffic information from an external provider via radio (traffic message channel (TMC)). The calculated route is stored in the navigation processor.

Destination-oriented navigation starts once the navigation processor has carried out the route calculation

3 types of display can be selected for graphic navigation:

Map

Map and symbol presentation of the turn-off points

Symbol presentation (system of navigation symbols)

The following display functions are supported:

Destination-oriented navigation map

Position map

Destination map

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Route map

Auto zoom

Intersection zoom

Traffic jam map, with code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation system)

Parking spot map

It is possible to change arbitrarily between the types of presentation. In all instances the destination-oriented navigation is backed up by voice outputs over the vehicle speakers.

If the drive is not used for navigation, audio CDs or, in vehicles with code (527) COMAND APS with CODE (527) Single DVD drive (with navigation system), video DVDs can be played.

Voice output

Voice output is conducted for:

Turnoff recommendations

Numbers of interstate, US and state highways in the USA

Compass direction in the USA (North, West, South, East)

There are further voice messages about the start and destination of the route.

VOICE CONTROL

Voice control can take place by means of letters or complete word input. Destination-oriented navigation starts once the navigation processor has carried out the route calculation
