The telephone system can be operated as follows:

Directly at the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3)

At the multifunction steering wheel (MFL) in combination with the multifunction display (A1p13) in the instrument cluster (A1)

With the voice control system (VCS) (code 813)

The telephone radio signals are transmitted and received by the telephone antenna (A2/22) and amplified with the portable CTEL antenna amplifier (A28/2). The display of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) shows when the telephone is in its ready status the destination field strengths in 5 grades. All control and useful signals (e.g. audio signals when hands-free system activated) are transferred via the digital data bus (D2B). For this reason, the portable CTEL (A34/6) requires the telephone interface (A34/4) to serve as the interface to the digital data bus (D2B).

The COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) has the following telephone functions:

Automatic disabling of telephone card when the Personal Identification Number is entered incorrectly 3 times.

Direct dialing of the telephone number with the rotary control or number pad, display of name of party being called (when number entered is known).

Speed dialing: The first 10 numbers stored in the memories can be dialed by pressing one key only; all other memories can be dialed by entering the 3-digit memory location number

Dialing from lists stored in the memory
- Numbers stored in the memory
