Determine shim thickness on drive pinion

B35.30-0083-01

The thickness of the compensating washers determines the friction moment (pre-load) of the taper roller bearings.

1 Place external taper roller bearing (1) on the flange (3) and the pinion case (2) on the bearing.

2 Place the internal taper roller bearing (4) in the pinion case (2).

3 Measure the distance "A" between both inside races.

With the 300 mm ring gear

4.1 Measure and take note of the measure “B” between the face of the taper roller bearing (1) and the external face of the bushing (6).

With the 233 mm ring gear

5 Compute the measure “E”, thickness of the compensating washers 233 mm and 300 mm ring gears.

4.2 Measure and take note of the measure “B” between shaft collar indicated by the arrow and the thrust surface of the bearing on the pinion (5).

The measure “E” results from the operation (A-B) and provides a no clearance adjustment, without friction moment.

To obtain the prescribed friction moment of the pinion bearings, select a compensating washer of smaller value than the value “E” found.
