The basic dimension is given by the adjusting bracket of the adjustment device (3).
1 Unscrew adjusting bracket (1) and attach to adjustment device (3).
2 Insert dial indicator (2) in the adjustment device (3) with approx. 2 mm preload.
3 Set dial indicator (2) to "0".
This adjustment corresponds to the specified basic dimension.
4 Remove adjusting bracket (1) and install on the adjustment device (3) again.

5 Clean the contact surfaces of the adjustment device (3) and the rear axle bracket as well as the end face of the drive pinion.
6 Insert the adjustment device (3) in the rear axle bracket so that the centering pin engages in the centering bore of the drive pinion and the probe of the dial indicator (2) is aligned with the end face (arrow) of the drive pinion.
7 Read off the dimensional deviation from basic dimension.
With a positive dimensional deviation (+) the dial indicator deflects towards negative, with a negative dimensional deviation (―) towards positive.
8 Determine actual basic dimension:
Actual basic dimension = basic dimension + measured dimensional deviation
Example: basic dimension = 83.50 mm
measured dimensional deviation = 0.25 mm
Actual basic dimension = 83.75 mm
Add positive dimensional deviations (+) to the basic dimension, subtract negative dimensional deviations (-) from basic dimension.

Each drive pinion and ring gear belonging to a gear set is identified with an electrically engraved number. Only gear sets with the same number may be installed. The identification is located on the end face of the drive pinion and on the inclined surface of the ring gear.
Example: Gear set designation 527 + 0.3:
The first number (527) is the number of the gear set (bevel gear and ring gear).
The second number (+0.3) is the measurement deviation from the basic dimension in mm, i.e. + 0.3 mm.
9 Determine specified basic dimension:
Specified basic dimension = basic dimension + engraved dimensional deviation
Example: (gear set designation 527 + 0.3)
Basic dimension = 83.50 mm
engraved dimensional deviation = + 0.30 mm
Specified basic dimension = 83.80 mm
In order to achieve the specified basic dimension (actual basic dimension = 83.75 mm), the distance from the center of the ring gear to the end face of the drive pinion must be increased by 0.15 mm:
Increase the thickness of the spacer washers (5) (max. 4 pieces) between the axle housing and tapered roller bearing by a total of 0.15 mm.
Spacer washers (5) are available in thickness of 0.1 mm and 0.25 mm.

10 If necessary, remove the drive pinion (4) again and correct the distance between the drive pinion and axle housing by spacer washers (5).
The thicker spacer washer (5) must be installed towards the axle center.
11 Install drive pinion and repeat measurement.
