Remove/install

Secure vehicle to prevent it moving away.

Empty compressed-air system completely.

Remove wheels from axle concerned.

 After jacking up, leave the lifting device positioned at the rear axle.

Support vehicle at frame.

Remove left and right anti-lock braking system (ABS) rpm sensor.

Disconnect electrical connectors from brakepad wear sensor (3).


Pull off and push on the plugs in an axial direction only.
Otherwise, the electrical connections may be damaged and the corresponding brake caliper will have to be replaced.

Remove compressed-air lines from combination brake cylinders.

Remove compressed-air lines from interaxle differential lock connection (10) and from interwheel differential lock connection (14).

Remove plugs from interaxle differential lock connection (10) and from interwheel differential lock connection (14).

Detach bleed line at top of axle housing.

On axle housing, detach secured lines and tie up to one side.

 Detach the compressed air distributor if necessary.

Secure propeller shafts to prevent them from dropping down, and remove from drive flange and output flange of rear axle.

Support rear axle using lifting device and secure to prevent it from tilting over.

Remove shock absorbers (5) from air suspension supports (7).

Remove stabilizer link (8) from bearing brackets (13).

Secure wishbone control arm (1) to prevent it from dropping down, and remove from bearing bracket on axle housing.

Lower rear axle and pull out from under vehicle.

Remove air suspension supports (7) from rear axle.

Only when replacing rear axle.
