Remove/install

Secure vehicle to prevent it moving away.

Completely empty compressed-air system.

Remove wheels from axle concerned.

 After jacking up, leave the lifting device positioned at the rear axle.

Support vehicle at frame.

Remove left and right anti-lock braking system (ABS) rpm sensor.

Disconnect electrical connector at left and right brakepad wear sensor (18).


Detach and attach the connector in an axial direction only.
The electrical connectors can otherwise be damaged and the brake caliper must be replaced.

Remove compressed-air lines from left and right combination brake cylinder and from interwheel differential lock (16).

Disconnect electrical connector from interwheel differential lock switch (16).

Disconnect electrical connector from temperature sensor (17).

Detach bleed line from top of rear axle.

Remove linkage from rear axle.

Remove compressed-air distributor and all line brackets attached to rear axle and tie up to one side.

Secure propeller shaft with tensioning straps and remove from rear axle.

Raise rear axle using lifting device until leaf springs (1) are relieved of load.

Remove both shock absorbers (8) from link brackets (6) on rear axle.

Detach both bearing caps (14) and remove torsion bar (12) from rear axle.

Remove trailing arm (5) from left and right link bracket (6).

Only on vehicles with 2 driven rear axles.

Remove wishbone control arm (19) from bearing bracket on rear axle.

Unscrew screws (15) on both decoupling elements and remove link bracket (6) at left and right with bushes (7).

On vehicles with 2 driven rear axles.

 Link bracket with elastomer bearing to rear axle

Remove spring U-bolts from rear axle.

On vehicles with 1 driven rear axle.

 Nut, spring U-bolt to rear axle

Lower rear axle and pull out from under vehicle.

Install in the reverse order.
