Remove/install steering knuckle

Removing

1

Remove front wheels.

 When removing the front wheels, the vehicle must be supported at the jacking points provided.

Press off brake drum with two bolts

 Identify position of brake drum to wheel hub with center punch mark.

Remove front wheel hub

Detach two guards from brake carrier

Unscrew and remove brake carrier from steering knuckle (arrows)

 Remove brake carrier complete with brake shoes, brake shaft bearing bracket, protective shield and diaphragm cylinder.

Detach steering knuckle arm from upright (5)

Remove circlips (1, 10)

Remove end cover (2, 9) and sealing rings (3, 8)

Push out kingbolt (4) from bottom to top

Remove upright (5) with taper roller thrust bearing (7) and shim.

Clean all parts and check for wear.

 Replace, if necessary.



Install

Check kingbolt dia.  and inner bearing bushing dia.

 If necessary, ream bearing bushing to size that is within same standard or repair size as the kingbolt.

Slide upright (5) with taper roller thrust bearing (7) onto the axle beam end (6)

Check end play of steering knuckle (5) and adjust if necessary

Center upright (5), taper roller thrust bearing (7) and shim on the axle beam end (6)



Insert spacer washer in the lower upright opening and install circlip (10)

 This is necessary in order, when installing the kingpin (4), to achieve the correct distance between the kingpin (4) and end cover (9).



Supercool kingbolt (4) and insert into steering knuckle (5) with magnet carrier

 The kingpin (4) should be completely covered with nitrogen. If the quantity poured in is used up, then the kingpin (4) is supercooled to approx. -140 °C.



Heat axle beam end (6) and insert kingbolt (4) into steering knuckle (5)

 Heat up the axle beam end to approx. 200 to 220 °C (yellow annealing color).



Remove circlip (10) and spacer washer



Install sealing rings (3, 8), end cover (2, 9) and circlips (1, 10)

Screw steering knuckle arm to steering knuckle (5)



Screw brake carrier to steering knuckle (5) (arrows)



Secure both protective shields on brake carrier



Install front wheel hub

Install brake drum

 Pay attention to marking.
