Caution | Risk of injury caused by scraping or cutting body parts on sharp vehicle parts | Always wear protective gloves when working on or near sharp and non-deburred vehicle parts.
Caution | Risk of injury to skin and eyes due to handling of engine oil. Risk of poisoning caused by swallowing engine oil | Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses.
Topical note | Notes on avoiding damage through contamination and foreign objects
| Remove | ||
1 | Remove flywheel/drive plate.
2 | Press radial shaft sealing ring(1) out of timing case cover(2) with suitable tool.
| Check | ||
3 | Check the sealing surface of the radial shaft sealing ring(1) on the timing case cover(2) for ridging and damage. | If there are problems,
| |||
Replace timing case cover (2).
| |||
| |||
4 | Check crankshaft for galling and damage. | If problems exist,
| |||
Install new crankshaft.
| |||
| |||
| Install | ||
5 | Push radial shaft sealing ring(1) in direction of arrow onto insertion tool (3a).
Insertion tool | |||
6 | Attach insertion device (3a) at crankshaft and tighten with two screws. | Insertion tool
7 | Slide insertion device (4) onto insertion tool (3), position on insertion tool (3a) and tighten nut. | Align bores in insertion tool(3) with the screws in the insertion tool(3a).

10 | Install flywheel/drive plate.
Only install lower engine compartment paneling after leak test.
11 | Check engine oil level and correct if necessary.
| |||
Concluding tasks | |||
Warning | Risk of burn injuries, suffocation and poisoning when working on the exhaust system and the components connected to it. Risk of suffocation and risk of poisoning caused by inhalation of gaseous and solid components of the exhaust. Risk of poisoning caused by skin contact with solid components of the exhaust. | Wear protective clothing and safety glasses. Use the extraction system. Move people out of the hazard area.
Warning | Risk of accident from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running. | Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts.
12 | Perform engine test run. While doing so, check engine for proper operation and leak tightness.
13 | Install lower engine compartment lining. |
