Remove

1

Apply the parking brake and release lightly the wheel clamping nuts

Lift vehicle and support it on racks located under the front axle beam

 The easels must be supported on the axle ends.

Remove the front wheels

Remove the wheel hubs (6)



Disassemble the hubs from the wheels (6)



Clean

Remove the grease used on wheel hub (6) and tapered bearings (5, 7)

 Do not use solvents to remove the grease and clean the bearings and the wheel hub. For cleaning, use a clean and lint-free cloth.



Check

Check the friction surface wearing for the radial seal track ring, if necessary, replace it



 The track ring must be replaced by a new one every time that its friction surface presents damages, wearing or grooves.

Check the tapered bearings (5, 7) for wear or damage

 In case of wear or damage in any of the bearings - either internal or external - or their races, they should be replaced always in pairs.



Install

Assemble the wheels hubs (6)



 Rigorously grease the tapered bearings (5, 7). Refuel the wheel hubs (6) hub caps (1) with the prescribed quantity of grease.

 Install a news radial seal.

Install the front wheels

Lower vehicle from rack and tighten wheels security nuts

 To chassis 688.1/2: Observe the for the new wheels nuts (plain) valid only for wheels with stamped holes (plain). The old nuts were tapered and valid with wheels with tapered drilling.
