Ring gear and pinion form a unique set, whose tolerances and finish do not permit any individual interchange, so that basic depth adjustment and teeth backlash are sufficient to allow installation. Nevertheless, an inspection to check the ring gear and pinion assembly tooth markings may be performed.
Inspection to check contact markings
1 Apply Prussian Blue paint to two ring gear teeth, offset 180º.
2 Rotate the pinion back and forth while braking the ring gear at the same time with a piece of hardwood (indicated by the arrow).
3 Compare the obtained contact marking with the following examples, and, should it be necessary, make the corrections required.

Correct contact markings
Checking carried out under load (ring gear braking)
In practice, generally, no ideal contact markings are obtained. However, it is important that they do not touch, in any place, the outer flank of the tooth surface.
B35.30-0086-01
Contact markings at the base of the tooth (incorrect)
Cause:
Pinion mounting measure too small.
Solution:
To increase a little the mounting distance ( basic measure ) of the pinion and, at the same time, to diminish a little the mounting distance of the ring gear, i.e., to make the ring gear teeth get deeper into the pinion teeth to conserve the correct backlash between the teeth flanks.
B35.30-0087-01
Contact markings on tooth heads
Cause:
Pinion mounting measure too large.
Solution:
To diminish a little the mounting distance ( basic measure ) of the pinion and, at the same time, to increase a little the mounting distance of the ring gear, i.e., to make the ring gear teeth do not get too deep into the pinion teeth to conserve the correct backlash between the teeth flanks.
B35.30-0088-01
Contact markings on the thicker flanks of the teeth
Cause:
Too large backlash between ring gear teeth
Solution:
To bring the ring gear a bit closer to the pinion turning the threaded rings and repeating the checking of tooth backlash.
B35.30-0089-01
Contact markings on the thinner flanks of the teeth
Cause:
Too small backlash between ring gear teeth
Solution:
To bring the ring gear a bit farther away from the pinion turning the threaded rings and repeating the checking of tooth backlash.
