Refer to Literature

The crown and the pinion are matched parts forming a distinct set whose allowance and finishing do not allow them to be interchanged or replaced individually.

In general, the adjustment of pinion basic measure and the backlash between the ring and drive pinion gears are sufficient for mounting. Regardless, by way of inspection, verification of contact marks of the ring and drive pinion gears assembly can be done.

Verification of contact marks

1 Grease with "Prussian blue", two ring gears 180° distant from each other.

2 Rotate the pinion back and forth while braking the crown with a piece of hardwood.

3 Compare the contact marks obtained with the examples of contact marks represented below and, if required, make the necessary arrangements.

Correct contact marks

In practice, the optimum contact marks are generally not reached. However, it is important that they do not touch any place in the outer edge of the tooth.

Contact marks on the tooth base (incorrect)

Correction:

Slightly increase the mounting distance (basic measure) of the pinion and, at the same time, slightly decrease the ring gear mounting distance, that is, make the ring gear penetrate more deeply into the pinion gear, to retain the right slack between the tooth flanks.

Contact marks on the head of the tooth (incorrect)

Correction:

Slightly decrease the mounting distance (basic measure) of the pinion and, at the same time, slightly increase the ring gear mounting distance, that is, do not allow the ring gear to penetrate too deeply into the pinion gear, to retain the right slack between the tooth flanks.
