In order to obtain the required axial play, the shells width of the crankshaft main adjustment bearing, must meet the established tolerance limits and pertain to the same degree of repair (normal/repair I/repair II).

Calculate the axial clearance of the crankshaft.

1 Measure the width (C) of the axial adjustment journal of the crankshaft.

2 Measure the width (J) of the axial adjustment shells, installed in the respective bearing and cap.

3 Calculation of the crankshaft axial play:

Value obtained in the measuring of width (C) of the thrust journal
- Value obtained in the measuring of width (J) of the respective bearing shells
= Axial clearance of the crankshaft

Measure the crankshaft's axial clearance.

Measure the axial play with the crankshaft duly installed, having all the bearing caps tightened following the established steps and torque specifications.

4 Fasten the dial gauge support (3) on the block and install the dial gauge (2), in such a way that its feeler touches the front end of the crankshaft (1) with a pre-load of 5mm. Attach the dial gauge (2) to the holder (3).

5 Move axially the crankshaft (1) to one of the sides and adjust the dial gauge scale to “0”.

6 Move axially the crankshaft (1) to the opposite side to read the value indicated in the gauge (2). The value found must correspond to the specification for crankshaft axial clearance.
