Networking
On vehicles as of model year 2016 there are two variants of chassis CAN (CAN E).
Variant 1:
If the vehicle does not include one of the equipment codes mentioned in variant 2, only one chassis CAN is still present.
Version 2:
If the vehicle includes one of the following equipment codes, one chassis CAN 1 (CAN E1) and one chassis CAN 2 (CAN E2) are present:
Code 218 (Backup camera)
Code 234 (Blind Spot Assist)
Code 459 (Steel suspension with adjustable damping)
Code 475 (Tire pressure monitor)
Code 476 (Lane Keeping Assist)
CODE 513 (Traffic sign assist)
Code 614 (Bi-xenon headlamps)
CODE 615 (Bi-xenon headlamp with active curve light)
CODE 618 (Bi-xenon headlamp)
Code 621 (Intelligent Light System (left-hand traffic))
CODE 622 (Intelligent Light System)
Code 631 (Static LED headlamps for left-hand traffic system)
Code 632 (Static LED headlamps for right-hand traffic system)
The following text differentiates between version 1 and version 2. Vehicles up to model year 2016 are assigned to variant 1.

Location
The electronic ignition lock control unit is located on the right, next to the steering column.
Task
The electronic ignition lock control unit has the following tasks:
Central gateway (interface CAN)
Global variant coding
Reading in of signals
Evaluation of input factors
Output of signals
Power supply for transmitter key (A8/1)
Central gateway (interface CAN)
The electronic ignition lock control unit is the central interface for the vehicle electronics and is connected to the following bus systems:
Interior CAN (CAN B)
Diagnostic CAN (CAN D)
Chassis CAN (variant 1)
Chassis CAN 1 (variant 2)
Chassis CAN 2 (variant 2)
Front end CAN (CAN G) (up to 31.05.2015)
Global variant coding
The electronic ignition lock control unit transmits global information such as model series and national version to the interlinked control unit via various CAN buses. The control units perform part of their configuration process to match this information.
Reading in of signals
The input factors are read in via the following connections:
Infrared
Direct line
Interior CAN
Diagnostic CAN
Chassis CAN (variant 1)
Chassis CAN 1 (variant 2)
Chassis CAN 2 (variant 2)
Front end CAN (up to 31.05.2015)
Infrared
When the transmitter key is inserted, encrypted data is exchanged via infrared signals between the transmitter key and the electronic ignition lock control unit for identification of the transmitter key.
Direct line
The signals from the following components are read via direct lines:
Electric steering lock control unit (N26/5) (transmission 711)
Access authorization code of transmitter key via FM, AM and ZV antenna amplifier (A2/18) (except CODE 889 (KEYLESS-GO) and CODE 893 (KEYLESS-GO start function))
Interior CAN
The signals are read in by the electronic ignition lock control unit via the interior CAN.
The functions that use these signals are described in the individual function descriptions (see block diagram or function schematic).
Diagnostic CAN
The signals are read in from the electronic ignition lock control unit via diagnostic CAN. As central interface for the vehicle electrical system, the electronic ignition lock control unit allows data exchange between vehicle control units and external diagnosis equipment.
The functions that use these signals are described in the individual function descriptions (see block diagram or function schematic).
Chassis CAN (variant 1)
The signals are read in by the electronic ignition lock control unit via the chassis CAN (variant 1).
The functions that use these signals are described in the individual function descriptions (see block diagram or function schematic).
Chassis CAN 1 (variant 2)
The signals are read in by the electronic ignition lock control unit via the chassis CAN 1 (variant 2).
The functions that use these signals are described in the individual function descriptions (see block diagram or function schematic).
Chassis CAN 2 (variant 2)
The signals are read in by the electronic ignition lock control unit via the chassis CAN 2 (variant 2).
The functions that use these signals are described in the individual function descriptions (see block diagram or function schematic).
Front end CAN (up to 31.05.2015)
The signals are read in by the electronic ignition lock control unit via the front end CAN.
The functions that use these signals are described in the individual function descriptions (see block diagram or function schematic).
Evaluation of input factors
The input factors that have been read in are evaluated by the integrated microprocessor and the relevant components are then actuated.
Output of signals
The signals are issued over the following connections:
Direct line
Interior CAN
Diagnostic CAN
Chassis CAN (variant 1)
Chassis CAN 1 (variant 2)
Chassis CAN 2 (variant 2)
Front end CAN (up to 31.05.2015)
Direct line
The following components are actuated via direct lines:
Electric steering lock control unit (locking voltage)
Electric steering lock control unit (serial data line)
FM, AM and ZV antenna amplifier (except CODE 889 (KEYLESS-GO) and CODE 893 (KEYLESS-GO start function))
Interior CAN
The signals are transmitted to the electronic ignition lock control unit via the interior CAN.
The functions that use these signals are described in the individual function descriptions (see block diagram or function schematic).
Diagnostic CAN
The signals are sent from the electronic ignition lock control unit via diagnostic CAN. As central interface for the vehicle electrical system, the electronic ignition lock control unit allows data exchange between vehicle control units and external diagnosis equipment.
