The long and narrow intake passages make it possible to fill the cylinders at low engine speed (greater maximum torque). The short and wide intake passages make it possible to fill the cylinders at high engine speeds (greater maximum power output).

The air intake is controlled by opening and closing intake flaps in order to direct the air into the optimum passage.
