Remove front center console

Remove rear air ducts (2)

Remove top part of instrument panel

Connect ground cable to battery

Move driver's seat toward front until front third of seat surface is below steering wheel.

Disconnect battery ground cable

Disconnect plug contacts from EIS control unit (N73)

Disconnect plug contacts from in-car temperature sensor (B10/4)

Unclip multipoint connector (3) from AC housing

Expose electric wiring harness (4) around crossmember (1) and around steering column

 Separate tie strap.

 Installation: Install new tie straps.

Mark installation position of nuts (5) in relation to crossmember (1)

 Installation: Align AC housing in relation to markings of nuts (5) on crossmember (1).

Unscrew nuts (5) and bolts (7) with rechargeable battery-powered drill and remove jacket tube cover from crossmember (1)

Unscrew bolt (8) from reinforcement brace (9)



Unscrew bolt nut (10) and pull out bolt (10)

 Installation: Use screw locking device.

Unscrew bolts (11) from crossmember (1) and carefully lay jacket tube with steering wheel down on driver's seat.

 Installation: Observe installation position of universal joint, otherwise universal joint can be damaged.

 Installation: Use screw locking device.

Mark installation position of crossmembers (1) in relation to A-pillars (arrows)

Unscrew screws (12) on transmission tunnel brackets

Unscrew screws (13) on firewall

Unscrew screws (14) on A-pillars

 Installation: Coat all bolts (12, 13, 14) with thread lock and screw in loosely, then align crossmember (1) in relation to markings on A-pillars and tighten bolts (13, 12, 14) without tension in sequence specified.

This avoids damage, leakage and noises.

Cover steering wheel and jacket tube module paneling with protective cover.

 In order to prevent damage when moving out crossmembers (1).

Lift crossmember (1) from AC housing and remove from electric wiring harness (4)

 Move crossmember (1) on left upward (observe inside rearview mirror and windshield) electric wiring harness (4) on center console out of crossmember (1) electric wiring harness (4) on right out of crossmember (1).

Do not disassemble crossmember (1).

When replacing crossmembers (1) transfer center console bracket.



 Installation: Ensure that sound deadening mat (6) is positioned correctly.

Install in the reverse order

Read out STAR DIAGNOSIS DTC memory, erase if necessary.



Connect STAR DIAGNOSIS and read out fault memory
