 Warning

Risk of suffocation and risk of poisoning caused by inhalation of gaseous and solid components of the exhaust. Risk of poisoning caused by skin contact with solid components of the exhaust.

Wear protective clothing and safety glasses. Use the extraction system. Move people out of the hazard area.

Remove/install

Remove side underfloor paneling.

Release tailpipe trims (2) on left and right from bumper and slide back.

Release and disconnect electrical connector (3) at exhaust gas flap controller (M16/57).

Release clamp (4).

Remove bolts (5).

 Screw, strut to frame floor assembly

Unscrew bolts (6) and remove strut (7).

 Screw, center cross strut (rear) to frame floor assembly

Support exhaust system downstream of catalytic converter (1).



Detach elastomer bearings (8).

 Pliers

Remove bolts (9) and remove front strut (10).

 Screw, center cross strut (front) to frame floor assembly

Pull out exhaust system downstream of catalytic converter (1) from bracket (12) and remove.

 Aid of helper required.

Remove clamp(4).

 Installation: Replace clamp (4) and seal.

Unscrew nuts (14) and remove bracket (12) from front axle carrier.

 Installation: Replace bracket (12).
Wet elastomer bearings (11) with Teflon spray.

Remove combustion and corrosion residues.

Check elastomer bearing (8, 13) for damage and replace if necessary.

Install in the reverse order.



Check installation position and clearance of exhaust system downstream of catalytic converter (1) and correct if necessary.

 Warning

Risk of accident from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running.

Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts.

Perform engine test run to check exhaust system for leaks.
