Check lithium-ion battery for acute damage

Danger

Risk of fire/risk of explosion due to short circuit and escaping oxyhydrogen gas. Risk of (burn) injury caused by caustic burns to eyes, skin and mucous membranes from battery electrolyte/mist, short circuit and arcing. Risk of poisoning caused by swallowing battery electrolyte or absorption of lead through the skin or body orifices. Risk of death due to voltage U >= 30 V AC and U >= 60 V DC.

No fires, sparks, open flames, or smoking. Wear acid-resistant gloves, clothing, and glasses. Pour battery acid only into suitable and appropriately marked containers.

AS54.10-Z-0001-01A

Danger

Risk of death when working on component parts and systems with U >= 30 V alternating voltage (AC) or U >= 60 V direct voltage (DC)

Do not touch damaged or defective live component parts and lines or non-insulated electrical connections and lines.

Acute hazard: A1 smoke

1

Check lithium-ion battery and its surroundings for smoke emission via a visual inspection.

Smoke emission is often an early indication of a fire.

If smoke emission is identifiable:

Immediately make an emergency call under the respective location- and country-specific emergency call number, do not touch the lithium-ion battery and exit the danger zone.

Acute hazard: A2 fire

2

Check lithium-ion battery via a visual inspection for fire sources (tarnishing, scorched detachable parts).

If the lithium-ion battery is burning,

Immediately make an emergency call under the respective location- and country-specific emergency call number, do not touch the lithium-ion battery and exit the danger zone.

Acute hazard: A3 heat development

3

Check lithium-ion battery via a visual inspection for internal heat build-up and/or consequences of a fire (tarnishing, scorched detachable parts).

If tarnishing and/or scorched detachable parts are identifiable at the lithium-ion battery:

Significant damage inside the lithium-ion battery can be assumed.

Immediately make an emergency call under the respective location- and country-specific emergency call number, do not touch the lithium-ion battery and exit the danger zone.

4

Measure the surface temperature of the lithium-ion battery several times within 10 min.

Commercially available devices/tools
Laser temperature measuring instrument or infrared thermometer

If the surface temperature of the lithium-ion battery housing is over 10 °C higher than the ambient temperature for at least 10 min or if a temperature increase of more than 2 °C/min occurs over a period of 10 °C/min (averaged):

Significant damage inside the lithium-ion battery can be assumed.

Immediately make an emergency call under the respective location- and country-specific emergency call number, do not touch the lithium-ion battery and exit the danger zone.

Check lithium-ion battery for acute damage

A

Electrolyte as gelled residual layer

B

Discoloration due to electrolyte on the housing

P54.10-3849-04

Acute hazard: A4 electrolyte leakage (visible/smellable)

5

Check lithium-ion battery for pungent odor caused by leaking electrolyte.

Avoid direct skin contact with electrolyte that may have leaked.
Electrolyte is volatile and has a pungent odor.

6

Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) or location/country-specific protective clothing when working with electrolyte.

If a pungent odor is noticeable.

Personal protective equipment for working with electrolyte consists of the following parts:
Protective gloves (standard EN 60903.2012 class 0 (designation A (acid), A+H (acid + oil), or R (acid + oil + ozone))).
Tightly fitting safety glasses, goggles, or face protection shield.
Long-sleeved protective clothing.
Respiratory protection – depending on the amount of electrolyte released and the intensity of the release.

7

Check the lithium-ion battery housing for electrolyte leakage.

Avoid direct skin contact with electrolyte that may have leaked.

Electrolyte may have different colors depending on the reaction (from light/clear to dark/opaque). If the cell only has mechanical damage, the electrolyte is clear.

If there is an electrolyte leakage.

Evacuate danger zone and keep a safe distance.

Absorb escaped electrolyte by means of absorbent granulate (vermiculite) and transfer to containers envisaged for disposal.

Clean component parts with suitable cleaning rages and place cleaning rags in containers envisaged for disposal.

Ensure that working area is well ventilated.
Wait for possible reaction of electrolyte (at least 20 min).

If the requirements for eliminating the electrolyte leakage are not fulfilled in the case of electrolyte leakage:

Immediately make an emergency call under the respective location- and country-specific emergency call number, do not touch the lithium-ion battery and exit the danger zone.
