Determining thickness of shims for differential on rear axle housing

1	 Insert adjustment device into axle housing.

 For a reinforced axle a ring  must also be used.

2	Measure gap between adjustment device and axle housing using a feeler gage . 

3	Determining distance dimension.

 The distance dimension results from the addition of 163.8 mm (dimension of adjustment device  ) plus the thickness of the feeler gauge.

4	Place the differential assembly and shims installed previously on a level plate.

5	Measure installation dimension of shim relative to shim.

6	Adjust installation dimension by replacement of spacer washers.

 The installation dimension is made up of the values determined under work step 3 plus approx. 0.16 mm. The installation dimension must be slightly larger than the distance in order to achieve a bearing preload. Spacer washers are available in thicknesses of 4.90 to 6.08 mm in graduations of 0.02 mm.
