Measure internal size of rear axle housing (1)
1 | Prepare gauge block A (04) from adjustment device. |
2 | Depending on ring gear diameter (Ø 215 mm or Ø 245 mm), insert corresponding gauge block A (04) (168.5 mm or 198.5 mm) into rear axle housing (1). |
3 | Slide gauge block A (04) so that one side is flush-fitted to the rear axle housing (1). |
4 | On the opposite side, use a feeler gauge (06) to measure the gap dimension between gauge block A (04) and the rear axle housing (1). |
5 | Calculate internal size of rear axle housing (1) and note down. |
The internal size of the rear axle housing (1) is calculated by adding the measured gap dimension and the length of gauge block A (04). |

Measure production difference in relation to specified basic dimension
A positive or a negative values is then returned as the result.
6 | Prepare gauge slide (01), adjusting gauge (03) and gauge block A (04) from adjustment device. |
7 | Attach gauge slide (01) to dial indicator (02). |
8 | Position adjusting gauge (03) flush to face of gauge block A (04). |
Depending on the ring gear diameter (Ø 215 mm or Ø 245 mm), use the accordingly marked adjusting gauge (03). |
9 | Insert dial indicator (02) into gauge block A (04) and set a preload of 14 mm (Ø 215 mm) or 4 mm (Ø 245 mm). |
Depending on the ring gear diameter (Ø 215 mm or Ø 245 mm), use corresponding gauge block A (04) (168.5 mm or 198.5 mm). |
10 | Set outer scale of dial indicator (02) to zero. |
P35.31-2267-09
11 | Prepare gauge block B (05) from adjustment device. |
12 | Insert gauge block B (05) into rear axle housing (1). |
13 | Insert gauge block A (04) with dial indicator (02) into rear axle housing (1). |
Depending on the ring gear diameter (Ø 215 mm or Ø 245 mm), the gauge slide (01) of the dial indicator (02) must be brought into contact with the marked measuring surface of gauge block B (05). |
14 | By turning the gauge block A (04) to and fro (arrow) in the bearing supports of the rear axle housing (1), determine the vertical position. |
The vertical position between the dial indicator (02) and gauge block B (05) is reached when the dial indicator (02) shows the maximum measurement value. |
15 | Read off measurement value in vertical position from dial indicator (02) and note down with corresponding sign (+, -). |
If, using the dial indicator (02), a value that is greater than the length of the adjusting gauge (03) is measured ( dial indicator (02) shows more than 14 mm (Ø 215 mm) or 4 mm (Ø 245 mm)), the production tolerance must be subtracted from the thickness of the spacer disk; a negative sign (-) must be used. |
If, using the dial indicator (02), a value that is less than the length of the adjusting gauge (03) is measured ( dial indicator (02) shows less than 14 mm (Ø 215 mm) or 4 mm (Ø 245mm)), the production tolerance must be added to the thickness of the spacer disk; a positive sign (+) must be used. |
Determine deviation from specified basic dimension
16 | Determine and note deviation from specified basic dimension . |
To determine the deviation from the specified basic dimension, the basic dimension engraved on the ring gear should be subtracted from the specified basic dimension for the rear axle housing (1). A positive or a negative values is then returned as the result. |
Calculation for determining thickness of spacer washer
17 | Calculate thickness of spacer disk to be installed. |
Spacer disks are available in thicknesses of 4.90 mm to 6.38 mm in graduations of 0.02 mm. |
