Check/adjust axial play of shift collar (interaxle differential lock)

W35.40-1036-01

In order to be able to adjust the axial play, the actual axial travel of the shift piston must be determined. The axial travel cannot be measured directly (e.g. with vernier caliper), but must be determined over the complete revolutions of the bolt M181.5.

Complete revolutions = number of complete revolutions + number of edges (K)

Axial travel of bolt M181.5

1 revolution = 360° = 1.5 mm

1 edge (K) = 60° = 0,25 mm

0.5 edge (K) = 30° = 0.125 mm

Checking

1 Using a deep socket (1) screw in the bolt (2) by hand into the cover (3) until the bolt (2) just contacts the shift shaft.

2 Mark this position of the bolt (2) on one edge of the bolt head relative to the cover (3) (arrows).

3 Using a deep socket and with the torque wrench tighten bolt to the specified torque, in the process count the complete revolutions of the bolt head and note as "Dimension A".

When tightening the specified tightening torque must not be exceeded, otherwise the shift fork warps and inaccurate measurements occur.

"Dimension A" must be a minimum of 5 revolutions. If 5 revolutions are not reached, the locking splines of the interaxle differential lock are in the tooth on tooth position and the drive flange or front axle shaft must be turned slightly until the locking splines of the interaxle differential lock are in mesh.
The mesh position is not visible, it must be determined by feel.

4 Using a deep socket (1) screw in the bolt (2) by hand into the cover (3) until the bolt (2) just contacts the shift shaft.

5 Turn drive flange of front axle shaft slightly until the locking splines of the interaxle differential lock are in the tooth on tooth position.

The tooth on tooth position is not visible, it be adjusted by feel.

6 Using a deep socket and using the
torque wrench, tighten bolt to the specified tightening torque, in the process count the complete revolutions of the bolt and note as "Dimension B".

The tightening torque builds up slowly in the tooth on tooth position. If this is not the case, operation step 5 must be repeated.

7 Calculate and note "Dimension C".
"Dimension A" - "dimension B" = "dimension C"

The axial play of the shift collar is correctly adjusted when the "dimension C" is 2 full revolutions + 2.5 to 3.5 edges.
The axial play of the shift collar is adjusted by inserting or removing the required adjusting disk.

8 Determine the required adjusting disk by means of the following table.

Example:
In the case of "Dimension C" of 2 full revolutions + 1.0 edge, an adjusting disk with a thickness of 0.5 mm must be inserted.

Adjust

9 Remove cover of interaxle differential lock.

10 Remove shift piston of interaxle differential lock.

Use impact extractor if necessary.

11 Coat the sealing surface of the shift piston with synthetic grease and reinstall the required adjusting disk.

12 Install cover of interaxle differential lock with new seal .
