1 Lay crankshaft (1) with outer main bearing journals on the crankshaft prisms (3).

Lubricate outer main bearing journal slightly with engine oil.

2 Place suitable steel base (4) under the main or connecting rod journals to be checked.

3 Turn crankshaft (1) and check hardness at a number of places on the circumference of a main or connecting rod journal of crankshaft (1) using the hardness tester (2) and note the values.

The hardness values must be obtained on at least two thirds of the circumference of a main or connecting rod journal.

4 Repeat hardness test on all main and connecting rod journals of the crankshaft (1).

The crankshaft (1) must be replaced if the hardness values on a main or connecting rod journal are not reached.
