Warning

Risk of injury caused by body parts being pinched or crushed as cab is tilted

Ensure that no one is within the tilting range of the cab as it is being tilted. Always tilt the cab all the way to the end position and secure with the safety strut.

Remove

1

Thoroughly clean area all around the steering gear

Dirt particles and moisture may not enter the electromechanical controller unit (5) or the steering angle and steering-wheel torque sensor (A77).
The steering angle and steering-wheel torque sensor (A77) can be damaged by moisture and dirt, which in turn can alter the steering ability.

4

Open window in driver door

5

Switch off ignition

6

Tilt cab

7

Secure steering wheel against turning

Fix the steering wheel in place on the support rod using e.g. cable ties.
Before securing, make sure that the steering gear is at the center position.

8

Detach bracket for steering shaft bearing (2) from cab mounting console (1)

9

Mark installation position of universal joint (3) relative to steering gear

10

Detach universal joint (3) from steering gear and fasten lower steering shaft (4) together with bracket for steering shaft bearing (2) the upper steering shaft to one side

11

Detach vinyl ring (6) from electromechanical controller unit (5)

12

Detach seal (7) from electromechanical controller unit (5)

13

Detach electrical connection (8) of steering angle and steering-wheel torque sensor (A77) from electrohydraulic power steering (APS) control unit (A73)

14

Remove bolts (9) of steering angle and steering-wheel torque sensor (A77)

15

Detach steering angle and steering-wheel torque sensor (A77) using a suitable tool from the electromechanical controller unit (5) and carefully place to one side

Make sure that the sealing ring (10) is not damaged.
This ensures that moisture does not enter the steering angle and steering-wheel torque sensor (A77) and damage it.

Check

16

Use an endoscope or a commercially available inspection mirror (11) to check whether the gear (12) of the steering angle and steering-wheel torque sensor (A77) is properly welded together

The gear (12) is properly weld where welding pins (arrows B) are not present, but rather a weld seam (arrow A).

If the gear (12) has been properly welded together or if the weld seam (arrow A) is visible.

Continue with operation step 17.

If welding pins (arrows B) are visible.

Mount steering angle and steering-wheel torque sensor (A77) and replace steering gear.

With regard to return shipment or scrapping of removed parts, please observe the information in your warranty system.

Install

17

Mount steering angle and steering-wheel torque sensor (A77) onto electromechanical controller unit (5)

Make sure that the sealing ring (10) is correctly mounted into the groove.
This ensures that moisture does not enter the steering angle and steering-wheel torque sensor (A77) and damage it.

18

Connect electrical connection (8) of steering angle and steering-wheel torque sensor (A77) to electrohydraulic power steering (APS) control unit (A73)

19

Apply grease to area surrounding primary shaft on electromechanical controller unit (5)

Use grease from parts kit.

20

Install new seal (7)

21

Apply grease between seal (7) and primary shaft on electromechanical controller unit (5)

Use grease from parts kit.

22

Install new vinyl ring (6) using assembly drift

Use assembly drift from parts kit.
Before installation, align toothing on the vinyl ring (6) with toothing on primary shaft. Then drive in the vinyl ring (6) using the assembly drift up to the groove for the fit bolt.
Align vinyl ring (6) level with the groove so that its toothing lines up with the toothing on the primary shaft, and the marking on the vinyl ring (6) lines up with the electromechanical controller unit (5).
After this, drive in the vinyl ring (6) up to the end stop using the assembly drift.

23

Mount universal joint (3) to steering gear

Observe markings.
