Move steering wheel all the way to the driver and downwards.

 Before starting work, check that a No Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) fault message is not shown in the instrument cluster!

 If, before starting any work, an SRS fault message is present, it must be rectified first. Fault rectification may not be settled through the recall!

Disconnect ground line of on-board electrical system battery.



Remove steering wheel.



 It is absolutely necessary to ensure that the wheel and tire assemblies are in the straight-ahead position before removal!

 After removal of the steering wheel, the wheel and tire assemblies must remain in the straight-ahead position until the work has been completed and must not be turned!

 After this repair, the screw for the steering wheel is to be marked with a color dot and reused. The thread is not cleaned and the residue of the micro encapsulation remains on the screw and the thread of the steering column.

 The serrations (arrow A) on the steering wheel must align with the marking (arrow B) on the steering shaft. Check position exactly before removal and use same position again for installation!

Check version of installed steering column switch module.

 The following steering column switch modules can be installed:
Valeo without modification.
Valeo with modification.
Kostal.

 Valeo steering column switch modules without modification can be recognized by the white support straps (3) and missing protective ring (4).

 Valeo steering column switch modules with modification can be recognized by the white support straps (3) and the protective ring (4) that has already been cast-on.
The cast-on protective ring (4) is recognizable by the six square openings (5).

 Kostal steering column switch modules do not have white support straps (3).

 The findings report from the scope of testing must be recorded in written form on the workshop order and then stored in a tamperproof manner.

A Kostal steering column switch module is installed.



End the measure.

A Valeo steering column switch module is installed.



Continue with operation step 6.



Remove

Remove cover (6) from installed steering column switch module.

 Release cover (6) using assembly wedge (7) in 11 o'clock position (see picture).

 Do not prop up assembly wedge (7) on the electrical connections!

 This operation step is not applicable to Valeo steering column switch modules with modification!

Install

Retrofit protective ring (4) onto installed Valeo steering column switch module.

 The protective ring (4) rests loosely and is held in place with the assembly of the cover (6).

 Note reference edges (arrow C) on steering column switch module relative to protective ring (4) during assembly.

Install cover (6) at steering column switch module.



Remove

Remove steering column switch module from steering column.



 Lift steering column switch module to one side with cables connected.



Install

Slide jumper (8) onto steering column up to end stop.

 Note direction of installation: The three contacts (9) of the jumper (8) must face in direction of travel (arrow).

 Insert contacts (9) into bearing outer race of steering column (see pictures a, b). If necessary, bend the contacts (9) slightly inwards.

Slide jumper (10) onto cylindrical elevation (E) of the electrically adjustable steering column.

 The steering column must be moved all the way down and all the way to the driver!

 The spring coils of the jumper (10) must be in direction of travel behind the cylindrical elevation.

 The end (D) of the jumper (10) must fit in the opening above the cylindrical elevation on the inside area.

Install steering wheel.

 After this repair, the screw for the steering wheel is to be marked with a color dot and reused. The thread is not cleaned and the residue of the micro encapsulation remains on the screw and the thread of the steering column.

Check

Turn transmitter key in electronic ignition lock to position 1 and check whether the airbag indicator lamp goes off permanently after a few seconds.

 This means that the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) check after replacing the airbag is fully assured!

16

Turn steering wheel up to steering limitation at left and right.

 Noticeable grinding noise must not be audible.
