General telematics services function requirements
Circuit 30
Transport mode not active
Each service is authorized separately.
The HERMES control unit is configured with the telephone number of the corresponding service provider.
The vehicle owner is registered and authorized at the Service Center.
General telematics services
At the vehicle side, the telematics services are realized by the HERMES control unit via a cellular telephone system connection to the Service Center. The HERMES control unit sends and receives the cellular telephone system signals over the HERMES GSM antenna.
For some services, the status of circuit 15 is taken into consideration. The electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit sends the corresponding signal over the diagnostic CAN to the HERMES control unit.
The telematics services function encompasses the following subfunctions:
Overview of the basic telematics services
Overview of telematics services (with code EY4 (Remote Online))
Voice connection between vehicle and Service Center
Position finding
Forwarding of vehicle data, displays, data queries and operating requests
Tracking and notification in the event of anti-theft warning
Overview of the basic telematics services
The following services, e.g. are available:
Maintenance management:
If the customer has taken out a service and maintenance contract, vehicle data is sent via the Service Center to the service partner if necessary; the service partner then notifies the customer that service is required through the medium selected by the customer (e. g. "MyMercedes", email, telephone). If the customer has not taken out a service and maintenance contract, a message appears on the Audio/COMAND display control unit 5 days before the calculated service date, asking whether a connection to the customer center should be set up. If the customer selects "Call now", a voice connection is established to the Service Center. If the customer selects "Call later", the message is shown again at a later stage. If the customer selects "No, thank you", the message is no longer shown when the service is due.
Telediagnosis:
The condition of the wear parts is monitored and, if necessary, sent via the service center to the service partner, the customer is then notified of the replacement requirement by the service partner using the medium selected by the customer.
Breakdown assistance:
By pressing the breakdown assistance button, the customer can request technical assistance via a voice connection with the Service Center. If the customer agrees, the required vehicle data are sent.
Overview of telematics services (with code EY4 (Remote Online))
With the app services, the customer can use his/her mobile devices, (e. .g. smartphone, tablet or PC) to send information and control requests via the Service Center to the vehicle and to receive current vehicle data.
Using the website "https://connect.mercedes.me" or the MB app "Mercedes me", the customer can configure and activate services on the "Mercedes me" portal.
The following telematics services are possible, e. g.:
Remote closing and opening of the doors:
The HERMES control unit forwards the request over the diagnostic CAN to the electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit . The electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit checks whether the locking or unlocking of all doors and the liftgate is possible, performs the locking or unlocking operation, if possible, and reports the status back to the HERMES control unit.
Vehicle status remote query:
Vehicle data such as for example door status and fuel level can be called up online.
Stationary heater programming:
The switch-on time of the stationary heater can be set online without range limitations and the status of the stationary heater can be queried online.
Pre-entry climate control programming:
The engine is started on a parked and locked vehicle (windows and doors closed) and after a limited period it is switched off again to enable the "last mode" of the air conditioning to achieve a pre-entry climate control. The HERMES control unit sends the triggering signal over the diagnostic CAN to the electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit.
The following telematics services are possible:
Vehicle position:
The customer can locate the vehicle in a surrounding area of 1.5 km using the smartphone.
Vehicle locating:
The customer is informed online of the current vehicle position by transferring geo-coordinates; the activation of this function is indicated in the vehicle by an icon on the Audio/COMAND display control unit and it can be terminated from within the vehicle by calling the Service Center.
Geographical vehicle monitoring:
The customer is informed online as soon as his/her vehicle leaves or arrives at an area marked by the customer; the activation of this function is indicated in the vehicle by an icon on the Audio/COMAND display control unit and it can be terminated from within the vehicle by calling the Service Center.
The "concierge service" allows the user to press the MB-Info button to request information over a voice connection (e. g. about a local restaurant or to request binding services such as, e. g. making a hotel room reservation.
Notification of a certain speed being exceeded:
As soon as the service is activated, the HERMES control unit reads in the speed value from the diagnostic CAN at intervals of no more than 5 seconds with circuit 15 ON and sends a message to the user if the determined value is exceeded.
Sending updates to the vehicle:
The HERMES control unit software is updated without the customer having to visit a workshop. The software is not updated immediately after being sent, but after a period of 15 minutes after circuit 15 OFF.
Visual and acoustic vehicle detection:
The visual and acoustic vehicle recognition makes it easier to find your own vehicle if it is outside the range of the transmitter key. The message for activation or termination of the panic alarm is forwarded by the HERMES control unit via the following route:
Diagnostic CAN
Electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit
Interior CAN
Signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit
Tracking and notification in the event of anti-theft warning:
This service is described in detail at the end of the document.
Additional function requirements for voice connection between vehicle and Service Center
No higher-priority service (e.g. automatic or manual emergency call) is active.

Prioritization
For the services that require a voice connection between the vehicle and the Service Center, the prioritization shown below is valid.
Telematics services can also be triggered after an emergency call following consultation with the customer via the Service Center. In this case, the voice connection that was set up for the emergency call is still used by means of redirecting within the Service Center. The emergency call is then converted into a service with lower priority.
Priority | Service |
1 | Automatic emergency call |
2 | Manual emergency call |
3 | Roadside assistance |
4 | MB Info |
Position finding
A determination of the current vehicle position is essential for many telematics services. The HERMES control unit takes over the position finding signals from the radio (Audio/COMAND). This sends the signals over the following path:
User interface CAN
Gateway for user interface CAN
Diagnostic CAN
Electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit
Diagnostic CAN
HERMES control unit
The HERMES control unit uses GPS for position finding. GPS position finding is irretrievable after vehicle transport (e.g. by train or ferry or after towing). Recalculation of the GPS position (following an interruption in satellite reception) can take several minutes. A basic position finding routine runs in parallel to the GPS position finding routine that makes it possible to also locate the position of the vehicle if GPS reception fails.
The position finding function consists of the following component functions:
GPS position finding
Basic position finding
GPS position finding
The HERMES control unit receives the GPS signals from the GPS antenna.
Additional function requirement for basic position finding
Circuit 15 ON
The electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit sends the status of circuit 15 over the diagnostic CAN to the HERMES control unit.
Basic position finding
The HERMES control unit requires the following signals for basic position finding:
Wheel speed and yaw rate signals from the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) control unit
Steering wheel angle from steering wheel angle sensor integrated into the steering column tube module (MRM) control unit
The Electronic Stability Program (ESP) control unit sends the wheel speed and yaw rate signals over the following path:
Chassis CAN
Electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit
Diagnostic CAN
HERMES control unit
The steering wheel angle sensor sends the signal as follows:
Steering column tube module (MRM) control unit
Chassis CAN (CAN E)
Electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit
Diagnostic CAN
HERMES control unit
The HERMES control unit uses the data to calculate the current vehicle position (longitude and latitude).
Rolling backward with circuit 15 OFF or vehicle transportation falsify basic position finding. In both cases, this deviation is automatically corrected on receipt of GPS data.
Forwarding of vehicle data, displays, data queries and operating requests
The HERMES control unit forwards the data, data queries and operating requests that have been received over the cellular telephone system connection to the Service Center over the diagnostic CAN to the electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit, from where they are distributed further according to the respective requests. The HERMES control unit receives the vehicle data over the diagnostic CAN from the electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit and forwards the data and the position finding data to match the requests over the HERMES GSM antenna to the Service Center.
The content shown on the Audio/COMAND display control unit is sent by the HERMES control unit over the following path:
Diagnostic CAN
Electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit
Chassis CAN
Gateway for user interface CAN
User interface CAN
Radio (Audio/COMAND)
MOST
Audio/COMAND display control unit
Tracking and notification in the event of anti-theft warning
The vehicle tracking function consists of the following subfunctions:
Anti-theft alarm
Vehicle theft report from customer to police via phone and then to Service Center
Vehicle tracking
Additional function requirements for anti-theft alarm
Anti-theft alarm system (ATA) is active for at least 30 s.
Anti-theft alarm
If the anti-theft alarm system (ATA) is triggered, the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit sends the "ATA alarm" signal over the following path:
Interior CAN
Electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit
Diagnostic CAN
HERMES control unit
The "ATA alarm" signal is sent by the HERMES control unit over the HERMES GSM antenna to the Service Center. The Service Center receives the "ATA [EDW] alarm" message and informs the customer that the ATA [EDW] alarm has been triggered. Vehicle tracking is not yet triggered by the Service Center.
Vehicle theft report from customer to police and then to Service Center
If the customer has been informed by the Service Center that his/her vehicle has been stolen or if the customer him/herself notices that the vehicle has been stolen, then he/she has to report the theft to the police first. The customer receives a special number from the police that confirms that the vehicle theft has been reported.
This number is used by the customer when notifying the Service Center and he/she forwards the number. The Service Center checks the query and the customer's proof of identity.
Additional function requirement for tracking
Vehicle reported as stolen by the customer to the police and then to the Service Center as well as proof of identity received by the Service Center
Vehicle tracking
After notification of the theft and legitimization at the Service Center an initiation command is sent to the vehicle by the Service Center. The initiation command is received by the communications module integrated into the HERMES control unit over the HERMES GSM antenna. The HERMES control unit then activates the position finding and also the voice connection to the vehicle, if necessary.
Then the communications module integrated in the HERMES control unit sends the position data to the Service Center in the same manner as the "ATA [EDW] alarm" message.
The position data is transmitted cyclically and for the following events:
Exceeding a certain distance
Circuit 15 ON or Circuit 15 OFF
The Service Center notifies the police of the vehicle's location.
Vehicle tracking can only be deactivated by the Service Center.
