Function requirements for Internet connection, general
Status circuit 30g ON
Transport mode not active
Internet connection, general
The Internet connection function is divided into the following subfunctions:
Internet access (dial in)
Internet usage
WLAN hotspot (wireless local area network) (with CODE EJ9 (COMAND Online) or with CODE EA2 (COMAND Online with 6-disk DVD changer))
Additional Internet access function requirements (dial in)
A mobile phone is connected to the radio (Audio/COMAND) via Bluetooth® and supports the Bluetooth® profile Dial-up Networking (DUN) and Personal Area Network (PAN).
The mobile telephone network provider permits VPN connections and use of the mobile phone for data services.
The clock in the vehicle is correctly set.
If the radio (Audio/COMAND) does not have the current time signal, certificate exchange problems can occur. Dialing in is only possible if a certificate can be successfully exchanged. GPS signals must be received in order to set the clock.
Internet access (dial in)
The function is activated by calling up the menu through one of the following controls:
Left multifunction steering wheel button group and right multifunction steering wheel button group
Central operating unit (COU [ZBE]) control unit
Touchpad control unit (except CODE EJ8 (Audio 20 USB))
Voice control system (VCS [SBS]) (with CODE EJ9 (COMAND Online) or with CODE EA2 (COMAND Online with 6-disk DVD changer))
The signals from the left multifunction steering wheel button group or the right multifunction steering wheel button group are forwarded to the radio (Audio/COMAND) via the following route:
Steering wheel electronics
Steering LIN
Steering column tube module (MRM) control unit
Chassis CAN
Gateway for user interface CAN
User interface CAN
Instrument cluster (KI) control unit
User interface CAN
In the case of operation using the VCS [SBS] (with CODE EJ9 (COMAND Online) or with CODE EA2 (COMAND Online with 6-disk DVD changer)), the hands-free system microphone converts the voice commands into electrical signals and forwards them to the radio (Audio/COMAND).
The central operating unit (COU) control unit and the touchpad control unit (except CODE EJ8 (Audio 20 USB)) send the control signals via the telematics CAN to the radio (Audio/COMAND).
The radio (Audio/COMAND) generates the screen display and forwards it via an LVDS line (low voltage differential signal) to the Audio/COMAND display control unit.
In the case of dial-up via the Bluetooth® profile Dial-up Networking (DUN), the mobile telephone network provider must first be selected on the "System" panel. The mobile telephone network provider can either be selected from the country-specific lists or, if the mobile telephone network provider cannot be found in the list, added using "New Provider". Further access information is required (e.g. on the tariff) that can be obtained from the mobile telephone network provider. As soon as the data is available, the connection to the Internet is set up.
The Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway is always used as the server to connecting to the Internet. This means that the user is only generally identifiable as a user of the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway when surfing the net and using services, and cannot be located in the network via his activities. To enable data to be exchanged between the vehicle and the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway, an encrypted VPN connection (Virtual Private Network) is set up.
Fees: Internet access and services are free from Mercedes-Benz. However, fees must be paid to the mobile telephone network provider in accordance with the respective mobile phone contract. Display options and the "Scissors (disconnect connection)" soft key in the function bar make it easier to manage costs with either a time or data volume contract.
On vehicles except CODE EH4 (Comfort telephony), the radio (Audio/COMAND) sends data to the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway via an encrypted VPN connection via the following route:
Bluetooth antenna®
Mobile phone
On vehicles with CODE EH4 (Comfort telephony), the radio (Audio/COMAND) sends data to the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway via an encrypted VPN connection via the following route:
Bluetooth antenna®
Mobile phone
Mobile phone cradle (accessories)
Mobile phone contact plate
Telephone antenna in right outside mirror
Depending on the requests from the radio (Audio/COMAND), the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway exchanges data with the World Wide Web and service providers via the Internet. The Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway sends the received data the opposite way via the encrypted VPN connection to the radio (Audio/COMAND).
Multiple use of the mobile phone: As a matter of principle, mobile phones that support the Internet connection function can be used to process several functions in parallel. It is, e.g. possible to make a telephone call when connected to the Internet, although this is dependent on the quality of the network being used. If the network connection is too weak, the Internet connection is merely maintained while the telephone call is being made.
Internet usage
The Internet can be used on the radio (Audio/COMAND) and operated using the following components:
Central operating unit (COU [ZBE]) control unit
Touchpad control unit (except CODE EJ8 (Audio 20 USB))
During operation, the content is shown on the Audio/COMAND display control unit.
Internet use is demonstrated below by way of an example through operation on the central operating unit (COU) control unit.
The Internet browser can receive audio signals (e.g. Internet radio). The volume can be adjusted using the volume control button. The control signal of the volume control button is forwarded as follows to the radio (Audio/COMAND):
Right lower control panel (LCPR [UBFR]) control unit
Telephone keypad LIN
Central operating unit (COU [ZBE]) control unit
Telematics CAN
The radio (Audio/COMAND) outputs the audio signals from the Internet via the speaker system or, on vehicles with CODE E65 (Burmester surround sound system), forwards them via MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit.
More detailed information on the speaker system is available in the "Speaker output function" document.
The Internet can be used in the vehicle in the following ways:
Use of Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway services
Unrestricted surfing
The services of the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway are supplementary to the navigation system and can be used while driving. Free surfing is only possible if the vehicle is stationary.
Use of Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway services
Turning the Audio/COMAND controller pulls the panel with the online services provided by the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway into the foreground on the Audio/COMAND display control unit. The selection is confirmed by pressing the Audio/COMAND controller. The individual services and the options for the services can now be activated in the same way using the central operating unit (COU) control unit. The method of operation and the screen displays have been adapted to the general operation of the radio (Audio/COMAND) as has the design of the displays on the Audio/COMAND display control unit such that operation is essentially intuitive.
When pressed once, the "Back" button of the central operating unit (COU) control unit navigates back by one level. If the "Back" button is held down longer, the application is closed and the home screen of the Internet function is displayed again.
The signals from the central operating unit (COU) control unit are forwarded to the Audio/COMAND display control unit via the following route:
Telematics CAN
Radio (Audio/COMAND)
LVDS line
By way of an example, the following services can be used:
Search for points of interest
Weather
Load points of interest and routes
Additional services are available or can be retrofitted.
Search for points of interest
Search terms can be selected from lists or entered on the character bar on the audio/COMAND display. Points of interest can be searched for as a search term at the current location, navigation destination, arbitrary location (free entry) or along the route.
The area that is being searched is defined under "Options".
The search results appear in the form of a list. Search results can be stored in the address book or under "Personal POIs" on the SD card (Secure Digital) in the SD card slot of the multimedia connection unit. If a list entry contains a telephone number, a telephone connection can be set up. A selected search result can be adopted as a destination by the navigation system; in this case, the radio (Audio/COMAND) switches to the navigation menu.
Weather
Weather information is displayed either as a weather data table or as a weather map.
In the basic setting the current weather data for the current location of the vehicle and forecasts for the next few hours are displayed. However, different time periods and locations can be selected, such as information about the weather along the route or at the destination. In addition, city names or ZIP codes can be entered with the character bar on the Audio/COMAND display control unit. The most up-to-date measurements and forecasts are always displayed. The topicality of the data depends on the relationship between the time of the query and the time of the last measurement.
Weather data are sent from the weather station nearest to the entered location. It can take a while to transfer and display the respective data, particularly if maps are being displayed or with a weak network connection.
Additional function requirements (load special destinations and routes)
An SD card is in the SD card slot on the multimedia connection unit.
A POI or route has been sent to the vehicle using Google Maps.
POIs that have been found on the Internet via Google Maps or routes that have been planned using Google Maps can be transmitted to the vehicle using the "Transmit" soft key on the Google Maps web pages.
Load points of interest and routes
The "Load POIs and routes" service lists the POIs and routes that have been sent to the vehicle and makes it possible to transfer them from the clipboard to the navigation system and the address book of the radio (Audio/COMAND) using the "Import" menu item. POIs and routes that have been transferred via Google Maps are then only continuously available in the vehicle if they have been transferred to the navigation system and the address book of the radio (Audio/COMAND) using the "Import" menu item of the "Load POIs and routes" service. The radio (Audio/COMAND) sends the data to the multimedia connection unit where the data is then stored on the SD card.
The capacity of the buffer is restricted to 20 routes and 50 points of interest. If more POIs and routes are sent than can be stored in the clipboard, the oldest POIs and routes are overwritten.
Because of the limited capacity of the buffer, transmitted POIs and routes are only available for loading for a limited time period (approx. 7 days), and only a limited number of POIs and routes can be made available for loading within the same time period.
If the POI or route is only needed immediately and not permanently, the navigation can be started directly via the "Navigate" menu entry without the POI or route being stored permanently. This function is also available without an SD card.
Additional function requirements for free surfing
Stationary vehicle
Unrestricted surfing
In order to connect to the Internet, either a URL must be entered or a page that is stored under "Favorites" must be selected. In order to navigate on the page, you can either move the cursor using the Audio/COMAND controller of the central operating unit (COU) control unit as though you were using a mouse, or jump from one selectable object (e.g. link) to the next on the current page by turning the Audio/COMAND controller (this highlights the object). Pressing the Audio/COMAND controller vertically downward calls up the menu. When activating a link, it is possible to choose between opening the link and opening the main menu after pressing the Audio/COMAND controller for the first time. When jumping to a text entry field, the character toolbar on the Audio/COMAND display control unit can be used to enter text.
When surfing, you can jump back a page (in the same way as on a computer) using the "Back" button of the central operating unit (COU) control unit. Pressing the "Back" button in the Basic menu closes the browser.
Surfing with the mobile browser is subject to the following technical restrictions:
No downloads
Web pages may appear differently than they do on a PC. This is because some web site providers provide their pages to a mobile browser in a different format that is specially designed for mobile devices, upon which Mercedes-Benz does not have any influence.
WLAN hotspot (wireless local area network) (with CODE EJ9 (COMAND Online) or with CODE EA2 (COMAND Online with 6-disk DVD changer))
The Internet connection can also be used with WLAN-capable external devices. The radio (Audio/COMAND) communicates with the external devices as a hotspot via the WLAN antenna.
