General
The automatic high beam adjusts the light distribution of the driving lights to match the given traffic situation and weather conditions. Variable light distribution positions the light exactly where it is required, without dazzling other road users. The result is a brighter and more precise illumination providing the best-possible visibility. If oncoming vehicles or vehicles driving in front could be dazzled, the automatic high beam functions switches off individual LEDs of the high beam modules. The remaining areas of the roadway light are still brightly illuminated. The driver can concentrate fully on the traffic, without any headlamp flashing or dimming.
A multifunction camera located behind the windshield monitors and assesses the traffic situation in front of the vehicle. All the low beam and high beam mode functions are realized without any mechanical actuator controls. The automatic high beam is operated through the multimedia system.
Function requirements
Low beams ON
Exterior lights switch in "Auto" position
Variable light distribution enabled
Combination switch in high beam position
Automatic high beams
The multifunction camera records and evaluates the traffic situation and the environmental conditions in front of the vehicle.
For automatic high beam output the following information is also evaluated:
Steering angle
Vehicle speed
Yaw behavior
A differentiation is made between the following automatic high beam operating conditions:
Optical headlamp range control (as from approx. 25 km/h)
Automatic high beam (from approx. 30 km/h)
Partial high beam (from approx. 30 km/h)
Optical headlamp range control (as from approx. 25 km/h)
The optical headlamp range control is activated to match the distance of the vehicle to other road users, and the road geometry (height differences, angle). The light distribution is changed here to provide better illumination of the roadway. The light cone varies between 65 m (standard illumination) and 300 m.

B | Low beam light cone for optical headlamp range control (maximum 300 m) |
C | Automatic high beam light cone |

Automatic high beam (from approx. 30 km/h)
The automatic high beams are activated when no other road users are detected. The high beam is operated at full power.
On sufficiently illuminated roads, the automatic high beam is deactivated.
ULTRA RANGE Highbeam (vehicles with dynamic LED headlamp)
ULTRA RANGE Highbeam generates the legal maximum permissible luminosity for the high beam. In comparison to halogen or static LED headlamps, the light performance in the middle range is improved by more than 150 meters. When the high beams assistant is active, no other road users are detected, the course of the road is a straight one and the vehicle speed is more than 40 km/h, the ULTRA RANGE Highbeam is automatically switched on. If other road users or highly-reflective traffic signs are detected, it is switched off again. The ULTRA RANGE Highbeam is deactivated in the case of rain (continuous wiping). In the case of a manually activated high beam, the ULTRA RANGE Highbeam is always active.
Partial high beam (as of approx. 30 km/h) (vehicles with dynamic LED headlamps)
If other road users that could be dazzled are detected when the automatic high beam is active, the partial high beam is activated. The individual LEDs are switched off here to mask off the areas of the light cone that could blind. Possible self-blinding by the high beam and high-reflection road signs are avoided by specific dimming of individual LEDs.
The partial high beam is deactivated when a vehicle driving ahead is detected and it is less than a minimum distance away. The switch-off threshold lies at approx. 30 km/h, if the partial high beam is active and if deceleration takes place from a speed of more than 45 km/h.
