Networking
On vehicles as of model year 2016 there are two variants of the chassis CAN (CAN E).
Variant 1:
If the vehicle is not equipped with any of the equipment codes quoted in Variant 2, then as was previously the case only one chassis CAN is available.
Version 2:
If the vehicle has one of the following equipment codes, then one chassis CAN 1 (CAN E1) and one chassis CAN 2 (CAN E2) is available:

A differentiation is made in the following text between Variant 1 and Variant 2. Vehicles up to model year 2016 shall be assigned to Variant 1.

The instrument cluster is located in the dashboard on the driver-side.

The instrument cluster reads in the input factors via the following connections:
Interior CAN (CAN B)
Chassis CAN (CAN E) (Variant 1) or chassis CAN 2 (CAN E2) (Variant 2)

The signals are read in by the instrument cluster over the interior CAN.
The functions that use these signals are described in the individual function descriptions (see block diagram or function schematic).
Chassis CAN (Variant 1) or chassis CAN 2 (Variant 2)
The signals are read in by the instrument cluster over the chassis CAN (Variant 1) or chassis CAN 2 (Variant 2).

Evaluation of input factors
The input factors that have been read in are evaluated by the integrated microprocessor and the relevant components are then actuated.
Actuation of components
The instrument cluster directly actuates all internal actuators (e.g. indicator and warning lamps, stepper motors of displays, multifunction display) as well as the instrument illumination.
Output of warning tones and indicator tones
To issue warning and alert tones requested by the systems installed in the vehicle, the instrument cluster actuates the warning buzzer or the acoustic function check for turn signal lights (issue of turn signal ticking) directly.
Output of signals
The signals are issued over the following connections:
Interior CAN
Chassis CAN (Variant 1) or chassis CAN 2 (Variant 2)

The signals are sent by the instrument cluster over the interior CAN.
