N80 Steering column module

Location

The steering column module is located on the steering column.

Task

The steering column tube module is connected for data exchange purposes with the engine compartment-CAN and the interior CAN.

Communication between the multifunction steering wheel and the steering column tube module takes place on a voltage-coded basis or through the local interconnect network (LIN) (with code (428) Steering wheel shift paddles)

The steering column tube module has the following tasks:

 Reading in of switches and signals

 Actuation of components

 Output of signals

Reading in of switches and signals

The input factors are read in with the following connections:

 Direct line

 LIN (with code (428) Steering wheel shift paddles)

 Interior CAN

 Engine compartment CAN

Direct line

The signals for the following components are read in directly:

- Steering angle sensor (N49)

- Combination switch (S4)
- Left and right turn signal switch (S4s1)

- Headlamp flasher/high beam switch (S4s2)

- Squib actuation 1 driver airbag (R12/13)

LIN

The signals for the following components are read in over the LIN:

- Left multifunction steering wheel button group

- Right multifunction steering wheel button group

- Steering wheel gear shifter MINUS (S110/1)

- Steering wheel gear shifter PLUS (S111/1)
(with code (428) Steering wheel shift paddles)

Interior CAN

The signals for the following control units are read in over the interior CAN:

- Instrument cluster (A1)

- Overhead control panel control unit (N70)

- EIS [EZS] control unit (N73)

Engine compartment CAN

The signals for the following control units are read in over the engine compartment-CAN:

- ESP and BAS control unit (N47-5)

- CDI control unit (N3/9) (with diesel engine) or
ME-SFI [ME] control unit (N3/10) (with gasoline engine)

Actuation of components

The following components are actuated:

- Switch and controls illumination (circuit 58d) for all connected components

 For vehicles with code (428) Steering wheel shift paddles the multifunction steering wheel button group and the steering wheel gear shifter are actuated over the LIN.

Output of signals

The status of the read in components is sent over the interior CAN and engine compartment-CAN to the corresponding control units.
