Driver assistance systems, function

18.04.2018

Model

470, 471

General function

The driver assistance systems support the driver in various situations either actively or passively depending on the configuration of the systems.

The following driver assistance systems are available and are described in separate documents:

Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) (see document "ADAPTIVE BRAKE, function")

Active Brake Assist (with code BA3 (Active Brake Assist)) (see "Active Brake Assist function" document)

Brake Assist System (BAS) (see "ADAPTIVE BRAKE function" document)

Downhill Driving Assist (Downhill Speed Regulation (DSR)) (with code E2D (Downhill Speed Regulation)) (see "ADAPTIVE BRAKE function" document)

Electronic brake force distribution (EBD) (see document "ADAPTIVE BRAKE, function")

Electronic Stability Program (ESP®) (see "ADAPTIVE BRAKE function" document)

Cruise control and limiter (with code MS1 (Cruise control))

Lane Keeping Assist (with CODE JW5 (Lane Keeping Assist))

Traffic Sign Assist (with CODE JA9 (Traffic Sign Assist))

ABS

The ABS system prevents the wheels from blocking when braking, and - as a result - it maintains the steerability and driving stability during vehicle deceleration. If a locking wheel is detected, then the brake pressure at the corresponding brake cylinder is reduced until the wheel turns again.

Active Brake Assist (with code BA3 (Active Brake Assist))

Active Brake Assist continuously checks the distance to the vehicle driving immediately ahead and warns the driver optically and acoustically of possible collisions with other vehicles. In an imminent collision situation, the Active Brake Assist initiates autonomous partial braking, if necessary.

BAS

The BAS detects emergency braking situations based on rapid actuation of the brake pedal and, if necessary, increases the brake pressure in order to achieve maximum deceleration.

Downhill Driving Assist (with code E2D (Downhill Speed Regulation))

The downhill speed regulation function maintains the setting speed by means of specific intervention by the brake system.

EBD

The EBD prevents overbraking at the rear axle and increases vehicle stability when braking on bends. To do so, the EBD selectively reduces the brake pressure at the rear wheels.

ESP®

The ESP® system monitors and improves driving stability and traction by means of targeted braking of one or several wheels and, if necessary, by additionally reducing the engine output.

Cruise control and limiter (with code MS1 (Cruise control))

The cruise control regulates the vehicle speed constantly and automatically to the set target speed.

The limiter limits the vehicle speed constantly and automatically to the set target speed.

Lane Keeping Assist (with CODE JW5 (Lane Keeping Assist))

Lane Keeping Assist detects when the vehicle inadvertently crosses lane markings and warns the driver by means of vibrations at the steering wheel.

Traffic Sign Assist (with CODE JA9 (Traffic Sign Assist))

Traffic Sign Assist detects the traffic signs on the route being traveled by the vehicle. It notifies the driver of signposted speed limits and prohibitions or their derestriction. It also provides optical and acoustic warnings when driving onto a freeway or expressway in the wrong direction.
