General
The gearwheels of gears 2-8 and the reverse gear are idler gears which are braked through synchronization devices and which can be positively connected with the respective power output shaft. 1st gear is formed by synchronization of idler gear 3 and 4.

Function
Multiple-cone synchronizer (3 cones) in 3rd gear
Multi-cone synchronization is used for synchronization of the 3rd gear. An additional cone ring between the friction ring and synchronizer ring and a friction lining on the friction ring are the decisive component parts. The three friction surfaces of the cone and friction rings effectively combine and allow the gears with a multiple-cone synchronizer to be braked and accelerated faster and with less force.
Double-cone synchronization in gears 2 and 4
Double-cone synchronization is used for synchronization of the 2nd and 4th gear. Compared with the multiple-cone synchronizer there is no friction lining here on the friction ring.
Single-cone synchronization in 1st gear, 5th to 8th gear and reverse gear
Single-cone synchronization is used for synchronization of the 1st gear and 5th to 8th gear and reverse gear. Compared with the double-cone synchronizer the cone ring and friction ring are not required here.
