Task
The position sensor crankshaft (B600) makes electrical voltage signals available to the engine management (MCM) control unit (A4) for a rotating engine from which the engine speed and position of the crankshaft are determined.
Structure
The crankshaft position sensor (B600) is an inductive sensor and is fitted with a sensor coil as well as a permanent magnet.
Function
The permanent magnet on the crankshaft position sensor (B600) generates a magnetic field. When the flywheel turns, changes in the magnetic field occur due to the bores in the flywheel. The bores in the flywheel are each located 6° apart except for left blank gap of 18°.
Inductive voltage signals are generated in this way in the crankshaft position sensor coil (B600) with the aid of which the engine management (MCM) control unit (A4) can determine the engine speed and, by using the gap of 18°, the angular position of the crankshaft.
