Explanation of vehicle functions of ECO start/stop function

Model

117.9, 166, 172, 231, 292

ECO start/stop function, general points

The ECO start/stop function automatically shuts off the engine under certain conditions when the vehicle stops. The engine starts automatically to start the vehicle up again. By doing so, the ECO start/stop function helps to reduce the fuel consumption and the exhaust emissions of the vehicle.

Automatic engine stop

The ECO start/stop function is operational and shows a green ECO symbol "A" in the multifunction display, if the following is given among other things

The indicator lamp of the ECO button lights up green.

The outside temperature is in a range that is suitable for the system.

The engine is at operating temperature.

The temperature in the vehicle interior is regulated.

The battery is charged sufficiently.

The system recognizes that there is no fogging due to moisture on the windshield while the air conditioning system is switched on.

The engine hood is closed.

The driver door is closed and the driver is buckled.

If not all conditions for the automatic engine stop are met, the ECO symbol "A" is yellow. All vehicle systems continue to be active during the automatic engine stop.

The automatic engine stop can take place a maximum of 4 times (first stop and three more stops) consecutively. The ECO symbol "A" in the multifunction display is yellow after the fourth automatic engine start. If the ECO symbol "A" in the multifunction display is green, automatic engine stop is possible again.

Vehicles with manual transmission

The ECO start/stop function shuts off the engine automatically at low speed.

Decelerate the vehicle.

Engage neutral position "N", if necessary, follow the shifting instructions in the multifunction display for engaging neutral position "N".

Release the clutch pedal, the engine is shut off automatically.

Vehicles with automatic transmission

If the vehicle is stopped in transmission position "D" or "N", the ECO start/stop function shuts off the engine automatically. The HOLD function can be activated on an automatically shut off engine; it is then no longer necessary to actuate the brake during the automatic stop phase. When the accelerator pedal is actuated, the engine starts automatically and the braking effect is canceled by the HOLD function.

Automatic engine start

The engine is started automatically, when

The ECO start/stop function is switched off via the ECO button.

Reverse gear "R" is engaged.

The seat belt is unbuckled or the driver door is opened.

The vehicle starts to drive.

This is required by the brake system.

The temperature in the vehicle interior leaves the selected range.

The system recognizes that there is fogging due to moisture on the windshield while the air conditioning system is switched on.

The charge level of the battery is too low.

Vehicles with manual transmission

The engine is started automatically, when

The clutch pedal is fully depressed.

the accelerator pedal is operated,

Vehicles with automatic transmission

The engine is started automatically, when

The brake pedal is released in transmission position "D" or "N" while the HOLD function is not active.

the accelerator pedal is operated,

Transmission position "P" is exited.

The engine is not started by shifting to transmission position "P". When shifting from transmission position "R" to "D", the ECO start/stop function is available after the green ECO symbol "A" appears in the multifunction display.

Switch ECO start/stop function on/off

Switch off: Press ECO button. The indicator lamp in the ECO button and the ECO symbol "A" in the multifunction display go out.

Switch on: Press ECO button. The indicator lamp in the ECO button lights up. If all conditions for the automatic engine stop are met, the ECO symbol "A" in the multifunction display is green. If not all conditions for the automatic engine stop are met, the ECO symbol "A" in the multifunction display is yellow. In this case, the ECO start/stop function is not available.

When the indicator lamp of the ECO button is off, the ECO start/stop function is switched off manually or as a result of a malfunction. The engine is no longer shut off automatically when the vehicle stops.
