The DIRECT SELECT selector lever is located to the right at the steering column. The DIRECT SELECT selector lever always returns to the starting position. The current transmission position "P", "R", "N" or "D" appears in the transmission position display in the multifunction display.

Press button of DIRECT SELECT selector lever in direction of arrow "P". The transmission position display in the multifunction display shows "P". When shifting to park position "P", the transmission position display in the multifunction display shows "P".
Park position "P" can only be engaged if the vehicle is at a standstill. When the brake is applied and the DIRECT SELECT selector lever is pressed upwards or downwards, the park pawl is deactivated. The transmission is then in neutral position "N".
At transmission fluid temperatures below -20 °C, it is only possible to shift from park position "P" to a different transmission position when the engine is running.
When directly shifting from park position "P" to "R" or "D", the brake pedal must be applied and the DIRECT SELECT selector lever must be pressed upwards or downwards past the first resistance.
Automatically engage park position "P"
Park position "P" is engaged automatically when the engine is shut off with the transmitter key and the transmitter key is removed.
Shut off the engine with the transmitter key or with the start/stop button and open the driver or front passenger door.
Open the driver door while in transmission position "D" or "R" with the vehicle at a standstill or at a very low speed.
Engage reverse gear "R"
With automatic transmissions, only shift the vehicle to "R" at a standstill.
When the transmission is in position "D" or "N", press the DIRECT SELECT selector lever upwards past the first resistance.
When the transmission is in position "P", apply the brake pedal and press the DIRECT SELECT selector lever upwards past the first resistance.
The ECO start/stop function is not available when the reverse gear is engaged.
Engage neutral position "N"
When the transmission is in position "D" or "R", press the DIRECT SELECT selector lever upwards or downwards up to the first resistance.
When the transmission is in position "P", apply the brake pedal and press the DIRECT SELECT selector lever upwards or downwards up to the first resistance.
When the engine is shut off in transmission position "R" or "D", the automatic transmission automatically shifts to "N".
With transmitter key: When the driver or front passenger door is then opened or the transmitter key is removed, the automatic transmission automatically shifts to "P".
With start/stop button: When the driver or front passenger door is then opened, the automatic transmission automatically shifts to "P".
If the automatic transmission is to remain in neutral position "N", e.g. to wash the vehicle in washing facilities with a towing device:
With transmitter key
Switch on ignition.
Depress brake pedal and hold depressed.
Engage neutral position "N".
Release brake pedal.
Release electric parking brake.
Switch off ignition and leave transmitter key in ignition lock.
With start/stop button
Remove start/stop button from ignition lock.
Insert transmitter key into ignition lock.
Switch on ignition.
Depress brake pedal and hold depressed.
Engage neutral position "N".
Release brake pedal.
Release electric parking brake.
Switch off ignition and leave transmitter key in ignition lock.
Engage drive position "D"
When the transmission is in position "R" or "N", press the DIRECT SELECT selector lever downwards past the first resistance. When the transmission is in position "P", apply the brake pedal and press the DIRECT SELECT selector lever downwards past the first resistance.

Transmission position "P" (model 172)
Transmission position "P" was changed on facelift 2016. Previously transmission position "P" was selected via the selector lever. As of the facelift, this is now selected via the park pawl button (2) below the selector lever.
