Danger

Risk of death caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off during lifting

Only lift vehicle at the lift support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer.

AS00.00-Z-0032-01A

Warning

Risk of accident from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running.

Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts.

AS00.00-Z-0005-01A

Warning

Risk of injury to skin or eyes from hydraulic fluid spraying out under pressure.Risk of poisoning from swallowing hydraulic fluid.

Depressurize hydraulic system completely before starting any work on it. Wear protective clothing and safety glasses.

AS00.00-Z-0013-01A

Warning

Danger of injury to eyes caused by steering oil emerging at high pressure. Danger of poisoning caused by swallowing steering oil

The setting screws for the hydraulic steering limiters must be turned in by at least three rotations. Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses.

AS46.00-Z-0001-01A

Warning

Risk of injury from being trapped in the swivel range of steered axles

Ensure that no persons or objects are in the swivel range of all steered axles when turning the steering wheel. Do not stand in the swivel range of the additional steering axle when the engine is running.

AS46.00-Z-0002-01A

Warning

Risk of injury to skin or eyes from hot hydraulic fluid spraying out under high pressure. Risk of burn injuries from contact with components heated by hot hydraulic fluid. Risk of poisoning from swallowing hydraulic fluid

Do not make any technical modifications to the pressure gauge or the test equipment. Check the pressure gauge and test equipment for mechanical damage each time prior to use. Observe the flow diagram when connecting the test equipment. Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses.

AS46.00-Z-0003-01A

Warning

Risk of accident and injury caused by diagnostic equipment in vehicle while traveling

Never use the test equipment to verify the delivery rate and oil pressure of the power steering pump or the pressure gauge while driving.

Check

1

Load vehicle so as to be as close to primary operating conditions as possible.

In isolated cases, and due to the steering kinematics, a front axle load that is too low may result in the steering limitation adjustment pressure not being reached or in adjustment not being possible.

2

Move front wheels to straight-ahead position.

3

Secure vehicle to prevent it moving away.

4

Raise vehicle at front axle until wheels can turn freely.

5

Open hood.

AR88.40-W-1000R

6

Unscrew screw plug (1) with sealing ring (2).

Collect escaping oil in suitable container.

7

Install test connection (5).

The test connection (5) can be ordered using part number A 942 351 00 69.

11

Check steering gear oil level and correct if necessary.

12

Loosen counternuts of steering limitation setting screws (6, 7).

13

Completely screw in steering limitation setting screws (6, 7).

The jam nuts must make contact with the head of the steering limiter adjustment screws (6, 7) and with the steering gear.

14.1

Unscrew steering limitation setting screw (6) for left steering limitation by six turns and steering limitation setting screw (7) for right steering limitation by eleven turns, and tighten counternuts.

Left-hand drive vehicle

Do not unscrew the steering limiter adjustment screws (6, 7) by more than the specified number of turns.

14.2

Unscrew steering limitation setting screw (6) for right steering limitation by six turns and steering limitation setting screw (7) for left steering limitation by eleven turns, and tighten counternuts.

Right-hand drive vehicle

Do not unscrew the steering limiter adjustment screws (6, 7) by more than the specified number of turns.

15

Start engine and run at idle speed.

16

Turn steering to left or right several times using normal force of the hand until a steering gear oil temperature of approx. 50 °C is reached in the steering.

Only pull against mechanical end stop at steering wheel circumference for a short period of time (max. 5 s).
Otherwise damage could occur to the steering system.

17

Turn steering wheel left up to mechanical end stop using normal force of the hand, read off pressure at manometer (3), and release steering wheel again.

Only pull against mechanical end stop at steering wheel circumference for a short period of time (max. 5 s).
Otherwise damage could occur to the steering system.

18

Note down measured pressure.

19

Turn steering wheel to right up to mechanical end stop using normal force of the hand, read off pressure at manometer (3), and release steering wheel again.

Only pull against mechanical end stop at steering wheel circumference for a short period of time (max. 5 s).
Otherwise damage could occur to the steering system.

20

Note down measured pressure.

21

Move front wheels to straight-ahead position.

22

Switch off engine.

23

Compare noted pressures with intended rated pressure.

Rated pressure (= governed pressure of pressure limiting valve in steering gear)

*BE46.25-N-1003-01C

If both pressures are equally high and match intended rated pressure:

Look for cause of possible problems in power-steering pump or mechanical component parts (pressure limiting valve (8) and seals in steering gear are OK).

If one of the two pressures is below the intended rated pressure, but the other pressure matches the intended rated pressure:

Replace steering gear (power-steering pump and pressure limiting valve (8) can be ruled out as cause of problems).

AR46.20-W-0500ZEA

If both pressures are equally high, but deviate from the intended rated pressure:

Replace the pressure limiting valve (8) and repeat the test.

AR46.20-W-1605ZEA

If both pressures are equally high after replacement of the pressure limiting valve (8), but are below the intended rated pressure:

Check delivery rate and oil pressure of power-steering pump (in order to rule out a defect in power-steering pump).

AR46.30-W-3100ZE

If the delivery rate and oil pressure for the power-steering pump are OK.

Replace steering gear.
