The measurements described in the following may only be carried out at room temperature and before installing the retarder otherwise the retarder may be damaged.
1 Measure dimension (a) between the sealing surface of the transmission housing (1) and the contact surface of the shim.
Note the measured distance (a).

2 Mount bearing outer race (2) on tapered roller bearing (3).

3 Mount measuring device (4) on retarder housing (1).

4 Tighten using 4 hexagon head bolts M 10x40 (Nm 10) rotate the pinion (6) by hand 15 times in clockwise direction and 15 times in counterclockwise direction.

5 Use a digital depth gauge (5) to measure dimension C: From upper edge of measuring device to measuring plate in measuring device.
Note down dimension C.
Note the measured distance (C).

6 Read off dimension H on measuring device (3)
Calculate dimension B:
Dimension B= H - dimension C.
7 Calculate thickness D of shim:
Thickness D = dimension B - dimension A - 0.02 mm.

The display on the vernier caliper (2) must show zero. Otherwise the transmission or retarder may be damaged.
If necessary, press the reset button (4) on the measuring slide (2) and repeat measuring process (work step 4 - 11).
