Danger! | Life at risk from vehicle slipping off or falling off the elevator | Position the vehicle on a suitable elevator so the wheels of the front axle, rear drive axle and driven axle remain supported with safety on the elevator supporting plates, on the lifting points determined by the vehicle manufacturer. | |
1 | Slacken the wheel fastening nuts (1) | Installing: To facilitate the centering, apply a thin film of grease on the washers and in the tapered wheel holes. Initially tighten the nuts equally and crosswise, observing the perfect seating. Next tighten all nuts to the specified torque. | |
For chassis 688.1/2: Observe the tightening torque for the new wheel nuts (plain) valid only for wheels with stamped holes (plain). The old nuts were tapered and valid for wheels with tapered drilling. | |||
2 | Lift the vehicle until the wheels clear the ground and support it on appropriate safety stands | Lift the vehicle at the support point, between the spring support, the front axle beam and the rear axle housing. Use a wooden block between the jack and the axles. | |
Do not lift the vehicle by the center of the axles. | |||
3 | Remove the fastening nuts (1) and the wheels (3) | Installing: Install the outer wheel with the tire inflation valve offset 180° in relation to the inner wheel valve. | |

4 | Check the tires and wheels for condition | Installing: Thoroughly clean the contact surfaces of the hub and wheels to permit a perfect wheel seating and centering. | |
5 | Check if the wheel fastening nuts (1) and the respective bolts present damages | Replace damaged nuts and bolts. | |
6 | Install in reverse order | ||
7 | Re-tighten the wheel fastening nuts after having driven the first 50 to 100 km. |
