The production tolerances of the drive pinion and crown wheel are such that the system will function correctly when the gear backlash and friction coefficient of the tapered roller bearing are precisely set.
The contact pattern of the crown wheel and pinion should, however, also always be checked as an additional inspection.
Check contact pattern
1 Coat two teeth of crown wheel (offset by 180°) with blue ink.
2 Rotate drive pinion forwards and backwards while simultaneously braking crown wheel with piece of hardwood.
3 Determine contact pattern by comparing with example contact patterns below.
W33.30-0020-01
Ideal contact pattern
Test performed under load conditions (crown wheel braked).
In practice, it is generally impossible to reproduce the perfect contact pattern. It is, however, important to ensure that the contact pattern on the tooth face does not extend to the outside edge of the tooth at any point.
W33.30-0021-01
Contact pattern at base of tooth flank
Cause: Installation dimension of drive pinion is too small.
W33.30-0022-01
Contact pattern at crown of tooth flank
Cause: Installation dimension of drive pinion is too large.
W33.30-0023-01
Contact pattern at tooth heel
Cause: Gear backlash setting is too high.
W33.30-0024-01
Contact pattern at tooth toe
Cause: Gear backlash setting is too low.
